Tack up small strips of brightly colored ribbon or reflective tape that will hang down and flap. Hang old CDs that will spin in the wind. You shouldn't have to keep them up for too long. Woodpecker will move on.

This turns out to be surprisingly difficult. Woodpeckers are not very bright (I see them pecking on telephone poles all the time). About all you can do is tack up some metal flashing material over the spots where it's pecking. This is cheap; you can get it at a hardware store, cut it to length, and nail it on your eaves. Unfortunately, the bird will then move to a new spot.

Well, we just feed the woodpeckers by adding woodpecker cakes from Petco to the side of our birdfeeders.

Not legal in my state....most woodpeckers breeds here are protected. Check with your state wildlife regulatory agency.

Ask your local wildlife services/authorities (see your phone book) for the best advice, and what's legal in your area =)
