You should encourage your brother to clean the cage more often. The guinea pig could get seriously ill from not having a clean environment. If your brother won't do that, then you might want to care for it, and share it, or he may give it to you. If you don't want to do that, then please find a new home for it, one that's inhabitant (human inhabitants) will give it a clean habitat, and just as much, if not more, love that you and your brother give it.

The guinea pig is smelly because your brothers cage is dirty. First I have a few tips for your brother:

1. Have a clean out of the whole hutch every 3-5 days.
2. Wipe the cage down with a warm cloth and vinegar.
3. Place newspaper throughout the whole thing followed by carefresh and topped with hay in the in closed section. Carefresh soaks up the urine and in turn makes the cage not smell so bad.
4. Change the food on a regular occasion.

Now for washing the guinea pig...
1. You will need a clothes basket with holes in it so that the water can leak, place the clothes basket into a bath tub.
2. Fill the clothes basket an inch or two with warm water and washing up liquid.
3. Place the guinea pig in the water and using a hard bristle brush, brush the water through his fur to get the dirt out.
4. Dry very well, you can use towels and/or a hair dryer.
5. Place piggy back into the cleaned hutch dry...

Good Luck:)

It is extremely dangerous for small animals to stay in a dirty cage. The ammonia from the pee causes upper respiratory illness. Guinea pigs, as prey animals, are really good at disguising illness so that by the time you guys realize he's sick-it'll be too late.

Yes, you can wash him, but you must use a shampoo formulated for kittens that doesn't contain heavy conditioners. Make sure you hold the little guy real tight. Wet pigs are slippery ones. Rinse really well and avoid getting soap and/or water in its eyes, ears or nose. Also, Guinea pigs are susceptible to drafts and cold, especially while wet. Make sure to towel dry your pet really well.

A last note of advice, when you or your brother cleans the cage, a little vinegar rinse really cuts through the urine well.

I just want to give you kudos for trying your best to better a difficult situation. You are greatly improving the life of that little piggie. If you are interested, I am a member of a really great guinea pig group. Let me know. I have two guinea pigs who are absolutely the loves of my life!

Use a dish pan with an inch of warm water in it, and use a mild kitten shampoo. Wash and rinse, then towel dry. Guinea pigs drink a lot and pee a lot. They also poop a lot. The cage bedding, which should be carefresh or aspen, should be thoroughly cleaned out and changed at least once a week. Forcing the pig to live in dirty cage will cause serious health problems. It would be like forcing your brother to live in a poop and pee filled bedroom. Yuck! Your parents have the responsibility to make sure the pets in the house are properly cared for, or else there should be consequences such as finding a new home for the poor thing.

If your brother doesn't clean it's cage once a week if I were you I'd clean it. And maybe you should switch litter. If you use care fresh or soft comfort it wont smell as bad. And take his piggy out every day and brush it. And once or twice a month give the piggy a bath with guinea pig shampoo not human shampoo.
To bathe the piggy put a towel in the sink and fill the sink with about an inch of warm water.Place the piggy on the towel and get it wet and rub in shampoo.Rinse the piggy well making sure not to get water or shampoo in its eyes, mouth, or ears.

This is a very serious issue!! The cage needs to be cleaned at least once every three days if using pine shavings, and I don't recommend using carefresh or any of the other absorbant paper products and this is why. Lets take a moment to think about what carefresh's job is and what it looks like when it has done its job. Carefresh is suppose to absorb and puffs up when it does absorb. Guinea pigs frequently ingest this product and it has been known to build up in their systems and cause digestive issues or block the digestive system entirely. What I recommend using is either pine shavings, not the big chip kind. Stallion bedding makes a great white wood shaving that is very soft. Or you can use 100% all natural wood pellets which absorbs urine very well. My choice is wood pellets on the bottome with Stallion bedding on top.

Now onto the dirty pig, it is very important to do this right!! You must never get water or shampoo in the eyes, nose, mouth or ears. The shampoo needs to be a small animals shampoo as piggies have very sensitive skin. You will place him in the kitchen sink with a towel under him to prevent slipping, wash him accordingly and dry him thoroughly before putting him back in the pen. I don't recommend using a blow dryer as it is to easy to burn a piggies skin or get it to hot in one spot and cause discomfort. A nice absorbant towel and some good gentle rubbing with get him dry in no time at all.

And this is the deal, unless he is really dirty like has urine on his hair or poop in his hair, I would let him clean himself. I read on here to give them a dust bath? Absolutely not, that could kill your piggie, don't do it!

Good luck

Heyy girl!
I have a hamster named Furby. He is usually getting himself dirty, so you're not alone on the whole 'cleaning' them thing. Anyway, what i did is bought the non-toxic and supersafe CLEANCRITTER WIPES at petsmart. they're used for ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, and rats. You just wipe your pet, and then they smell like baby powder and it's hard for the smell to get rid of unless, they roll in pee. You should also brush the guinea pig at least once a week, and remember to remind your brother to clean the cage once a week or every other week, change the water and food every day, and give his guinea pig the attention he/she needs. Good luck!!!

yeah well for starters if your brother leaves the cage really dirty thats hell foor the guinea pig so try to keep it clean. if the guinea pig is really dirty give him a bath and use mild puppy shampoo to clean him. make sure you wash it all out. then for a good 15 minutes brush him thoroughly. then air dry him on low heat. good luck and make sure you follow these instructions carefully.
