In a VOIP network once the phone call is in the internet how does it get from the nternet to the person dialed

its comes thru your cable (high speed interent) not the computer....ya see, the computer don't have to be on!!

So far only one person has made a decent stab at answering the question. But he didn't answer the question that was asked.

I got the idea of how the call goes from my handset, via the VOIP supplier onto the Internet.

But what happens at the other end?
I assume there is some kind of switch or gateway that connects the call back from VOIP to PSTN. But where is it and how is it done?

from your phone the voice signal is converted into an analogue electrical signal, then the signal travels to your ATA (analogue telephone adapter) which converts the signal to digital packets that travel over the internet to your VoIP providers switch, which is connected to the PSTN (publicly switched telephone network) and from there it is sent to the caller the same as a normal landline call would be...

for calls between the same VoIP carrier, the calls never touch the PSTN network, they are internallay routed.

for calls between VoIP providers, it more then likely goes from your voip providers switch, to the PSTN network, to the other VoIP providers switch, before it is sent back over the internet to complete the call...

it is very similar to how cellular calls are completed...

the reason mobile to mobile is free, and many times voip providers provide free calls between people within the same network, is that the call is handled internally, and the provider docent need to pay any line access charges for the call to be completed...

cellular is sent in radio wave to the tower, which is connected to a T-1 line, back to that carriers switch...

If the person does not have a computer, it goes through the ordinary phone lines.
