Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, all come from the same source, Abraham. So you can't really say which one came first because they all started at the same time. Technically, Judaism was first, than Christianity, and then Islam.

Buddhism is relatively new, as far as religions.

Of the major religions in the world today, Hinduism is the oldest, however Hinduism has undergone some serious changes through-out the centuries.

It's likely that Man has been inventing gods since the earliest days of our species, but that these have been lost in time. Look at Stonehenge, an hour's drive from here: probably not a secular structure. And we know that cave-dwellers seem to have made religious or ritual artefacts.

John M. Allegro speaks of the earliest religions of which any records exist as having arisen at the start of agrarianism, when Man became totally dependent on natural events like rain and sun, and personified these as deities in order to try to influence them. The sun was the most obvious deity - what else but a god could it be?

These matters are tens of thousands of years old, but there's still long ages of semi-human history that's gone forever.

Christianity which means followers of the Messiah

Adam and Eve were given the promise of the Messiah in Genesis 3:15 that one day he would crush the head of the evil one that tempted them.

this is how I as a Jew came back to my roots in the Messiah=this is how I as a Jew came to know Jesus personally

"Unto us a child is born, a son is given, and he will be the mighty God, and the prince of peace." Isaiah 9:6

the answer is still in the salvation of the soul-till then we are on the outside looking in. Revelation 22 "Do not add to my word or take from it or you will receieve plagues, and never find salvation.

this is how I got salvation-believing the Word of God="I love you, and ask you to repent of your sins (even one lie) quickly. Behold I stand at your heart door and knock if you hear my words and ask me in, I will come in and be your friend." Revelation 1:1=Jesus words spoken from heaven & 3:19&20

so i prayed "Jesus I am sorry for my sins, come into my heart and help me, be my friend, amen."

Now Jesus is my Messiah, Bright and morning star, best friend, and savior, he comforts and keeps me, and His word has become the love letter of my life in Spirit and in truth.

Praying the best for you too, David

The earliest known religion was a primative form of Snake worship. There was an article about it last year in a prominent science journal.

Paganism in its many forms evolved in different cultures at about the same time - worship of a god or multiple gods, worship of natural forces such as the sun and moon, etc. were very common long before Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, etc. came about.

Hi, ED:

I'll have to say it is the Order of Melchizedek. Why, because Abraham paid tithes to him, he was priest and king.

After Noah's flood, there were religions scattered everywhere; in fact, Moses sought Jethro, a prophet and high priest, but God knew religious people were dwindling, so Melchizedek is my choice--he endures.

Why? Because they still exist in Samaria, have a complete and accurate record, and I know one pastor who was ordained into their group and he wasn't a Mormon either.
One more thing, The Bible says that God says: "I will appoint you a priest FOREVER after the order of Melchizedek." That is Jesus, who was God our Creator before sin originated in Heaven, He is our Redeemer, and will rule this planet throughout eternity as KING AND PRIEST--that is, Church and State under one perfect leadership under "The Order of Melchizedek".

Interesting question.

Do you mean an 'orgainized' religion or a belief in a god. Surely they had many gods, like the sun.

The Essene's are a very old religion, as is the Gnostics.

Animist , The belief in the existence of individual spirits that inhabit natural objects and phenomena.

FYI; Judaism started with Abraham whose father was a maker of idols

people worshiped the sun first before anyone got the idea there had to be gods. they were also worshiping nature and most every group has at least a concept of good and evil that you do affecting what happens to you when you die. the rest is power, organization, manipulation, money and control.

I believe those would be like small village, tribal, or local religions used by Indigenous/Primitive people...

Just because it's a big religion doesn't mean it's the first....
