Guard dogs are trained dogs. They do not occur spontanously without training. Some dogs are better suited for this training as are some dogs better suited for being trained as trailing dogs. Dogs are not "protective" that behavior is actually a dog be territorial and this is not good because you cannot call off a dog that is being territorial. Guard dogs are trained to attack on command and to be 100% reliable when called off. You do not want a guard dog. Invest in a home security system that can be easily turned on and off.

Most all dogs will protect the family- but I think you have the turning on it's owner part totally wrong. If you treat your dog with love and compassion it will return it to you and some dogs love even when they are abused- They are indeed the MOST loyal pets- if your dog sees you as the leader of the pack and he/she knows it's place in the family your dog should never think about turning on you- anyhow try a Labrador or a Chesapeake bay retriever great family dogs with a high tolerances for kids pulling at their tails and good protectors

Sudden changes in temperment are usually due to a vaccine reaction which is known as vaccinosis. The rabies vaccine is the usual culprit and it can happen no matter what breed the dog is. As long as you take good care of your dog and not do things to it to make it more aggressive, then you will have a wonderful companion whi will give their life for you. And don't feed your large breed puppy "puppy food" to promote slower growth and reduce the risk of developing bone and joint problems such as hip dysplasia.

Mastiffs! They're big, and look intimidating, but they are the friendliest goofballs with their families. They will guard your house too, and best part is, they don't attack so much as hold at bay, so you don't need to worry about their teeth.

I had a mastiff and he liked to get in the middle of arguments by grabbing the aggressors arm and pulling him away. He never once pressed down hard enough to leave a mark let alone break the skin.

Boxers are excellent guardians. My boxer will growl and bark when people come to the door, but he is the friendliest dog in the world. I know that if someone attacked me he would be there taking a chunk out of my attacker.

a Labrador retriever is a very loyal dog...
it wont attack the owner and it will just bark at guest because they are not familiar to the dog....
you have to train it though..and say bad dog no barking or whatever you prefer...:))

With a guard dog you should teach them a command like "off guard". That tells them to cool it and act like a regular family dog. As for the dog I would say a Doberman Pincher, German Shepperd, or, be leave it or not, a Yorkshire Terrier.

most dogs will natrally protect the home without training. just buy a puppy and treat it with love and it wont hurt you and it will feel the need to protect its "pack" and protect its home.

dont toughen up a dog as they will become vicious
