So far, I have traced my Mother's family (her maiden name was COSTON) back to 1700 in England, but the name dates back to before William the Conqueror took the census there in1086, and listed it in a book he called the DOMESDAY BOOK. There is a town in Shropshire County--where most of them came from--named Coston, in fact. My problem will be tracing it between 1086 and 1700. :) My grandfather always said we were of French descent, so I am wondering if William--who came from France's Normandy region--had a girlfriend or mistress with the last name Coston.?? LOL I do know, however, that the name William is VERY prominent among the family members. In England today, there are several spellings for the name (like CAUSTON, COSTEN, COSTIN, etc) that may be one and the same family, and what is called a "one-name study" is being done.
I also have some Cherokee Indian ancestors on Mom's side. I think my Dad's family goes back to France somewhere along the line, because according to my aunts, the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne is one of Dad's ancestors. He was also remotely connected to both Presidents Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt.

The joke is that anyone who can answer probably hasn't researched their genealogy very far back.
