My son and I are planning a trip and we've never been to NY. I hear the Macy's fireworks are the best and that's the plan for now, but I'm also planning to stay in NJ and take the Staten Island Ferry in for the fireworks.
Is it safe for tourists to walk in Manhattan and ride the Staten Island Ferry to get back to our hotel in the late evening (11pm-12mid). I know that this may sound like a stupid question to New Yorkers. I've just never been there and don't want to make a rookie mistake. Also, where in New Jersey would you stay that is reasonable and in a decent area?

Yes, definitely safe, although be prepared for crowds and keep an eye on your stuff (I got my pocket picked last December in the midst of a holiday festival). The Staten Island Ferry is waay out of your way if you're staying in Jersey. I'd look at hotels in Fort Lee, as some of them run shuttle buses into Manhattan.

staten island and the ferry are not near the fireworks.
That is the sound end of the island and fireworks are in the middle 30s on the east river.
You have a hike on this one.
Also if you stay in Jersey why not just go to Hoboken Terminal dn PATH to midtown and then cross town to the fireworks. the FDR is closed so you can stand there.

go to the macys web page for more information and directions on the event.
This is a safe location.

Yes, it's fine.

NJ hotel options might include Jersey City or Weehawken.

Are you planning to drive over the Goethals and park in Staten Island? It might make more sense to take a train or bus from NJ directly into Manhattan than to make the loop through SI.

It's safe. However, Staten Island isn't in New Jersey. There is a Marriot Courtyard in Jersey City that is near the PATH Train.

hoboken is a great area, very close to nyc, short train ride. i think u shouldnt have a big problem riding the train back late at ngiht around 12 or 1 bc there will be a lot of people out as well as police presence. just dont talk to strangers, avoid drunk people and have a good safe time.
