Will you be less likely to visit an amusement park or ride a thrill ride this Fourth of July holiday? Personally I like to live dangerously, but how do you feel about it? Some poor girl in Ohio lost both her feet on a free fall ride, a twenty year old girl died in NY on the "Brain Scrambler" and a child was knocked unconscious on a tea cup ride in Florida... Do you still wanna go?

I stand corrected, it was Kentucky where the girl got de-feeted... its nice to see so many of you out there are paying attention.

We have already been to an amusement park this summer, and we plan to go back tomorrow, as we have annual passes. These incidents are "freak" accidents.

And while they are tragic, it is not anymore tragic than injuries, deaths, and dismemberment caused by other means... for example and auto accidents. Are going to stop driving your car, because there have been so many car accidents this year?

I don't ride anyway otherwise I get SICK.

But I do not think these rides are maintained. It is all about MONEY and PROFIT for these businesses. They dont spend a nickle they dont have to. But they do get periodic inspections so they have to keep some regular maintenance.

Smaller Carnivals are the worst. There are so many injuries with these rides.
That is because the rides are old and not very well maintained. Once again it is all about the profit. The Carnies that work these rides get drunk regularly and you are trusting them to keep you safe. They really dont care about their job and they dont get paid much. If something happens, the Carnie is fired and the owner of the Carnival is fined and closed down. Therefore, the Carnie has nothing to lose because he can get a job down the street at the competitor. Bigger parks like Disneyland have many safety features in place. They can not afford to injure the customers. They are large corporations that have ties to many other companies like food and beverage. If they have a fatal accident they can lose TOO MUCH. You will find them safer than other parks.

First off, sorry, but if you're going to ask a question and use real life accidents, it's best to get the information correct.

http://www.rideaccidents.com/
The accident with the girl who lost her feet was in Kentucky, not Ohio.
The 20 year old who died in NY was actually a 21 year old who died at a park in NY on a ride she was WORKING. Her accident was actually her co-worker's fault because he wasn't paying attention when she said she was going to lock in riders. He started the ride while she was still on it, which flung her off, killing her.
And the Florida accident wasn't on a tea cup ride, but rather the Rockin' Roller Coaster. And it wasn't in Florida, but rather at Disneyland PARIS.

Accidents like these, while unfortunate, are also rare. The case of the girl at Six Flags in Kentucky was a FREAK accident that may or may not have been preventable due to the circumstances of her accident and the cause.
The majority of amusement park accidents are caused by either pre-existing health problems with the riders, or are the result of the rider not seated properly and being thrown from rides, or simply operator error.

With these accidents, they don't change my mind one bit about amusement parks. I still believe they are safe, and sometimes are safer than riding in cars (more accidents daily on the roads than at amusement parks).

The 21 year old girl in NY was a park worker-not a passenger. Her co-worker started the ride before making sure she was off of it after securing riders. Anyways just last week I won 4 tickets from a local televison station to Darien Lake (NY) and I'm giving my sister 2 of the tickets and she will be going on Monday and then I'll probably go in August before the new college semester starts. Its freaky to know about all these terrible things that have happend but I'm not going to be scared and live my life in a shell.

I'd still go. The Intamin Giant Drop rides like the one in Louisville are closed until an accident cause and solution are determined. I think the Brain Scrambler and teacup rides were freak things.

When you ride, just make sure you read the warning signs and follow instructions.

Actually it wasn't in Ohio that the girl lost her feet it was Kentucky! I know this cuz I work for Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio and it caused a major scare. I basically live at six flags and love the rides. Freak accidents happen everywhere no matter what you do so don't freak! Ride operators are trained very extensivly for your saftey!

jees eggman, way to throw a 16 oz Alpine Bobsled Adventure (TM) Slushie right on top of everyone's amusement park fun-filled 4th of July! :)

no, i have to admit, once a REAL tragedy occurs on a ride -- even something small like breaking a finger or getting cut -- makes one quickly realize that the whole experience of getting "thrilled" at an amusement parks is complete self-deluded fantasy and gives you absolutely NO real taste of what tragedy is like.

how about they have a thrill ride that hooks up to your brain and makes you cry uncontrollably and want to commit suicide for three straight hours? yeah, how about it gives you the illusion you were having a great day of fun with your cute-as-a-button little 7 year old girl and then poof she was gone forever and you lived the rest of your life staring into space? wow, now THAT would be some ride!

You are far more likely to die on the drive to the park than on a ride at the park. However, I plan to avoid all those overnight carnival rides. At the big parks, I will skip the big thrill rides but I will do that anyway.
