i have just started running more often and dont know what to eat. I like to eat something before i run or i cramp on an empty stomach. Is there anything special to eat that will give me good energy but at the same time not have me cramp. Also how long should i wait before when i eat and when i run?

At a lot of big races there is food at the starting line. Don't try anything unusual before a race, but bagels, bananas, and oranges are very good for you. Have some water, but not a lot.

If it is 5 or less I don't eat until after my run. I may have a sports drink an hour before but that is about it. If it is a longer run I have found that a little low fat yogurt and some granola about 90 minutes before sets best for me. I have tried bagels and bananas but they just don't sit well. Everyone is just a little different so you will have to experiment to see what works best for you. Keep a log of what you had the time before the run and how you felt during the run.

You can eat any food with a high level of carbs and low level of fats. Carbs is the first energy source used by the body to get energy (Pasta is a good example). You can eat 3-4 hours before running while digestion takes place.

Eat less than normal before the race. Try small meals the day before, and something as simple as a banana and a glass of skim milk on race morning. The key is choosing something easy to digest. Not ham and eggs, which your body has to work hard to break down.

Good luck on your running!

I'm a cross country runner and I run alot. To avoid getting cramps you need to eat foods that are high in potassium. Have a banana five minuts before you go out running.

I'm a crosscountry runner I know.

i run cross country and track and i found a banana, pretzels, nutri-grain bars or a bagel would be good to eat about 30 minutes before running. dont have anything greasy, heavy, or dairy.
