I have heard of the terrible 2's but what is going on when a happy 3 year old turns 4 and is more and more whiny and miserable and upset over everything!! Is this normal?

(I asked once but only got 2 answers-I still need help!)

He has been 4 since Jan and has just gotten worse. No big changes like a new baby or anything like that.

I know what you mean. My son was always a happy baby, a happy child and then bang, he turned 4 and I wanted to hang him. From what I've read on the Child.com website and Parents.com magazine, the 4th and 5th years are the years of whining. and OMG are they right on the money. So try not to lose it and try to make him realize how much he is whining, my son is now 5 and Thank God it's passed. I think it's worst than the terrible 2's..But don't worry it's just another beautiful phase to make the parents crazy.
Good luck

If you walk into any day care center you will see that the 4 yr old room is the loudest most out of control and has the most whining of any of the age groups.

His behavior is extremely normal and frustrating. He is a big boy and a baby at the same time. He knows what he wants but doesn't know how to get it.

Google emotional development for a 4 yr old and maybe it will help you understand what to expect and some tricks to help you deal with it.

Good luck!

Gosh this question gets asked a lot. Here is a link to the same question asked yesterday and my reply. The child in this case is a 3 year old, but the answer applies to a 4 year old just as well. Don't worry, Its completely normal and as you can see, almost an epidemic. :-)

They go through this. The way my son's preschool teacher and pediatrician explained it to me was....it is like they go through a stage of early puberty. They are developing so much at this time that it is easy for them to have anxiety issues. Just speak to your pediatrician about this. Usually it stops at age 5 or so. Just hang in there :)
