What do you mean by "messed up"?

The need for glasses is primarily due to inherited factors or normal aging. Some eye diseases are also inherited, some are due to aging and others have unknown causes.

Some things that you do can cause eye damage. Smoking is a contributing factor to quite a number of eye diseases and not smoking is the single most important thing you can do to protect your vision.

Other factors under your control that will help protect your eyes:
Wear safety glasses. Wear sunglasses outdoors. Eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, do moderate exercise. Take blood pressure and diabetes medication as advised by your doctor.
