Does an 18 year old who appears to meet the requirements and already has three Mastercards have a fair chance of getting accepted for a credit card from American Express?

I think you should have a decent chance considering you already have a few credit cards. I don't have any experience with american express but I think there are a few cards that don't have annual fees.

American Express charges your a hefty fee every year and the best rate I've seem for myself is 23.00%. The odds are your going to get stiffed from AMEX on all the additional fees if you screw up just once. Stay with your three Mastercards.
I've had credit cards for over 40 years and AMEX ain't worth it.

First, why do you want an AMEX card? They charge about $150/year annual fee to use it.

Second, why does an 18 year old need 3 Mastercards?

It's possible. It is all based on your ability to pay the bills. They look at your credit history and your income, not at your age. If you have had your credit cards awhile and have a great credit history that will help you. I got my American Express card at 20.
