National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing
Notice it does not say World Association. It was created by Americans for Americans. From the roots of American automotive history in the south.
I have been called a red neck I have no problem with it at all.
My sister calls me a left turn enthusiast.
I do live in the south.
I don't really care about what is popular anywhere else. I only watch it because I like it.
God bless America.
P.S. What does this have to do with religion?

This was the beginnings of NASCAR. I live here in the area where it all began, so I'm very familiar with it.
It began as just beat up old trucks driven by moonshiners with their deliveries of illegal liquor, trying to get away from government officals who were chasing them. On a regular basis. It was kinda a sport around here. I think for both the moonshiners AND the govt. officials lol.
Slowly these good ol boys began holding their own races against each other, and pretty soon NASCAR was born. It became a cultural institution in the South here, and then spread to the rest of the country.
I have NO idea why on earth it would be the number one sport in the USA at all. I guess "red-neck" isn't confined to the South?
By the way, the next county over from where I live is the ONLY county left in the country that has "Revenuers" (govt officials assigned to shut down moonshine makers) still in existence in the USA. Yes, there are still people up in the Appalachians and down here in the valleys who make moonshine, it's a generational tradition. No, I've never tasted it.
Oh, to tie this question and answer in to Religion, since that's the category you posted it in...... these good ol boys around here are mighty religious folks, many of the snake-handling churches are here. You know they were prayin to Jesus to save their hind ends as they tried to escape from the Revenuers!

Formula 1 is wimpy. Wimpy cars that fly apart at the slightest contact. NASCAR is true grit racing, bumping and drafting. The cars look similar to what we drive, so some people relate to it for that reason (although the cars are very sophisticated race cars, and are NOTHING like ordinary passenger cars...).
But NASCAR is changing. Toyota is competing now, and there's a foreign born driver that's got a major car and sponsor (Juan Montoya, with Texaco). The sport has been "dumbed-down" in recent years with stupid rules, restrictor plates, and practice rules that seem to favor the larger and better financed teams. Many of us want to go back to the old cheatin', fightin', drinkin' stars that made the sport great.
Nowadays, many of the races are just plain boring...

I agree 100%, I don't get left turns for hours on end. Look at the crowds, they were former WWF fans who barely graduated high school. They are not athletes I don't give a rats you know what how f'n hot it gets in there. And have you ever heard of a pick up game of Nascar? I can go to any park and play Baseball, football, basketball, tennis, volleyball and a number of other SPORTS. I can't get behind the wheel of a $500 grand car. Nascar sucks.

It represents the American Ideal.
Run around in circles as hard as you can to see if you can at least finish where you started.
Of course it might get interesting next year. Canada has decided to create a racing team in NASCAR to promote environmentalism and teach people that fuel economy is a good idea.
You just got to love the way Conservatives think!

If you can't get excited about NASCAR, then don't bother watching it, but you don't have to put the sport down. I happen to enjoy watching auto racing. The point is to be the first one across the finish line. To win the race. Really, is that so hard to grasp?

I'm an American. I don't watch NASCAR. Nobody in my family ever watched it, as far as I can recall. In fact, nobody I personally know watches it. I have a lot of friends and acquaintances, and not a single one of them is a NASCAR fan. To me, car races would have to rate among the most boring events on Earth. But if somebody else likes that sort of thing, then hooray for them. I'm not interested in it, but each to his or her own.

I'm not sure what you mean, "what is in it for you?". People watch it because they enjoy it; it's the same with any other sport.

The point is to waste as much gas as possible while at the same time complaining about the price of gas, so as to make our country look completely retarded.
