what i always do is when im gonna invite my friends over and they have kids...sometimes their kids are beyond bad...i always try to tell them ahead of time and i always throw in the line "so see if you can find a babysitter"
or i always make sure to mention the fact that im gonna get a babysitter myself
good luck..and i dont see anything wrong with you not wanting children over tonight....ITS YOUR HOUSE!

I would rather hear someone invite me with "Hi, I am having an adults only BBQ tonight. Would love it if you two could make it"
That way you do not imply that parents may need a brake from their kids (we do!) but some people a waaaaaaaay to touchy

It may be a problem for them to get babysitters. If you don't like having kids, don't invite the adults either.

No, just specify politely that it is an adult-only party.
But don't be surprised if some can't make it because of that.
If you are telling them the no kids rule now, and the party is tonight, some of your friends with younger children might not be able to get a baby sitter.

You can politely say, "We are having a BBQ tonight and have invited some of our adult friends to attend. Would you and your husband like to come?

I would say something like, "hey we're going to have some grown up fun tonight, get a sitter and come on over!"

Just invite the neighbors, and let them know that children will not be allowed. There is nothing wrong with having an "adults only" event.

You don't need to imply that they need a break from anything,
just let them know that the party is an Adults night out. You
can say anything. Its all in the attiutde.

I think that is a great way to do it. "if you need a break from the kids come on over." What a wonderful way to do it. NOW I know what to say. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I didn't help you, but you helped me. LOL

You'll need to make it an "adults only" party.
