I can walk 5 miles a day easily.. my legs may start to cramp toward the end of my walk. I wan to to start jogging/running. I have never really been a jogger/runner.
The past couple of days I started off jogging 1/2 a mile. I would be gasping for air/feeling sick/hot by the time I completed half mile. I would rest & then get my second wind feeling like I could continue to run but always go for the walk.
What can I do to build my endurance for jogging/running? What can I do to stop the shortness of breath/etc? Will I be able to jog without feeling that way?
I really would love to jog 1-2 miles a day instead of walking....
Please help me. If you have a training program or know of one let me know.
Thanks :)

I agree with all that has been written so far...start small, increase your jog time, etc.

I wanted to add that when youa re jogging pay attention to your breathing. Try to take longer breaths - when a person first starts jogging sometimes you breathe to fast - almost like hyperventilating. So pick a jogging pace and then decide how your breathing will match that and focus on that. For example for two steps breathe in, two steps breathe out...this will focus your attention on the breathing and cause you to get more air! Kind of like being in labor but not! Good luck.

Continue to cover your 5 miles, but put your jogging at the end of your run or in the middle. Run for 5 minutes, then continue your walk. The second week, say, Tuesday and Friday, try to run for 10 minutes.

Slowly and gradually increase your running time and take 1 day off each week.

Good Luck

I think you already have the right idea. Just jog until you need to walk and walk until you feel like jogging again. Your running distance will improve and you will be able to run further. You will be able to run without feeling bad. Do not run too fast. If you can not talk while you are running then you are running too fast. Your cardiovascular conditioning will improve. Don't get into too big of a hurry and do not feel disappointed just do what you can do. There is not any pressure or competition.

You are on the right track. Try to walk for 10 minutes and jog for 2. Then try to walk for 9 and jog 2. Slowly increase until you are doing more jogging than walking. Then increase some more until you can jog as far as you want to.

what i would recommend is to start a walk/run regimen... don't get into the stopping and starting thing, because that will get you into the bad mindset of thinking that you can just stop whenever you want to...
try doing your normal walk, walking for 2 minutes, and then jogging for 30 seconds... gradually make the jogging sections longer until you're running your goal distance
good luck!

The only way to get better at jogging is to jog. It's supposed to be hard at first but after your body adjust to it you'll be jogging all day.
