Forget sitting down and repeating a word over and over. You'll get bored and so will your bird.

Just use the words you want him to learn in context when you are near him. For instance, when you are going to cover the cage for the night, say something like "nighty night" or when it's feeding time, say "it's dinnertime" or "Polly wants dinner!", "good morning" when the cage is uncovered for the day.

Be consistent and say it in a high sweet voice like you are talking to a toddler. If your bird wants to talk, he will learn to talk in context and eventually will actually make some sense when he talks, not just babble nonsensically. This takes awhile but worth it in the end. I have a Senegal parrot who tells me to shut up when I am too loud, asks to be put to bed by saying "nighty night" and generally talks more than my African grey (who also speaks in context but on a lesser extent). All of this is without giving one single "talking lesson". When my husband actually tries to teach them words with a lesson, they ignore him! LOL!

Good luck.

i have 2 african greys. the way i taught them to talk was, i selected one word. i repeated the word for about 10 minutes every day. say it very clearly and slowly. dont do it too long at a time because they will get bored and lose interest.when they try to talk let your bird know it is doing well by giving it a treat. eventually it will catch on. good luck.

I have a budgie, we taught him to talk by clearly repeating the same thing over and over even though he wasn't trying to mimic us at the time, then all of a sudden he said it. But I believe you have to do it while it is quite young. Try something simple at first, like pretty bird. Be patient because it does take quite awhile, but our budgie can say alot of things now, and it is worth the time. Good luck!

Two words REPETITION and PATIENCE! Repeat the same word over and over and over again every day.
Our birds first word was mama because she heard that the most, then she said I love you, then kiss me, you get the idea.
Have fun and it will be very exciting to hear the first word or words.
