It sometimes seems that there is magic at work.
When I lose things, for some inexplicable reason I go all paranoiac and imagine someone has taken them. I don't know why this, as I have rarely had anything stolen from me (who would want my junk?) and inevitability I find the articles exactly where I left them (strange because I looked there first of all!).
I just don't know what makes me so suspicious, it's unnatural and unfair and I always feel guilty afterwards. But on the other hand........................... I might be right!

Just finished reading a story about the same thing. Turns out to be the spirit of an 8 year old boy, who was killed by lighting. And now and again
goes back to his old home, and plays tricks on the new owners. They don't bother about it now they know what it is.

Bored elves/gnomes/sprites or real physical children?
treating them as children and giving them a ticking off usually gets the items back(mothers/females seem to have more success with this. It's probably practise...)

Asking them to perform tasks like mending shoes, darning cobwebs or ensuring that you'll always have a working pen, seem to eliminate the problem (although you will put a pen down for 5 minutes and when you look again it will have mysteriously changed into a different pen which writes with the same colour!).

you appear to put a lot into the things you can`t explain,if you look for things to be unexplainable you will find them .As all things are explainable with rational thought you will find the things that go missing havn`t gone missing,it`s just that you couldn`t find them until now.

Someone moves them when you are not looking, and the same someone returns them in a similar fashion. Or, if you are female, you put them in a "safe" place, so safe you forgot where it was!
