It is supposed to mean that one can only recieve salvation if God wills it to be.

Life is not so like that. God does not bias towards one soul or the next arbitarily..

All souls have their own path to salvation, some straight, and some convoluted. It is like snow melting on a mountain top, which way do the droplets flow before they reach the reservoir. All ways! Everybody is unique.

Not everyone can find the answers they want straight away. Nature automatically responds to all human behaviour in a cold way without sentiment. Cause and effect. Many look to God only when they are at the suffering end of Karma, or when they have lost the will to conquer the world to meet their own desires.

Hence there is the saying "through suffering one finds the grace of God".

When one finds devotion and acts only in sacrifice to God, rather than selfishly, one cannot be effected by one's own sins. When your senses are used in the forefillment of God's work, they cannot be misused for sense gratification.

Simply put it means
that there is nothing you can do or say that can change the sentence that the judge has handed down after declaring you guilty.

No amount of pleading, crying, or promising to be good will or can be heard.

No time off for good behavior, you must pay the sin debt.

Suddenly, along comes someone who says, I will pay the price for you. I love you and do not wish for you to pay the extreem penalty for this crime.

I do ask that you follow my example in return, but either way, I paid the debt for you.

Now if you believe that I am a figment of your imagination, you will reject this offer. But, if you believe that I am real, you have just been granted the biggest gift (grace) that can be given.
Grace is giving someone something that they do not deserve.
Mercy is not giving someone, somthing that they do deserve.

"Regarding the debate about faith and works: It’s like asking which blade in a pair of scissors is most important."
-- C.S. Lewis

Grace means we couldn't save ourselves without Christ's atonement, no matter how good we were. But don't leave out works, they are just as necessary, this is very clear in the Bible (faith without works is dead, etc.). Christ paid for our sins, but it will not be of any effect unless we repent and follow commandments, otherwise we will have to pay for our own sins.

It means that God is God, and no one can force God to save them, by any means.

For this reason, salvation will always remain a gift ... the unmerited favor of God ... according to his grace and mercy, which was obtained for us solely by his son, Jesus.

We are saved by grace - God's unmerited favour.
One we don't deserve. The verse continues.....not of works lest any man should boast.

Grace is being given something good that you didn't earn. Rewards are earned, Grace is not.

It means that when Jesus said "Not everyone that saith unto me 'Lord Lord' will enter into heaven, but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." he didn't know what he was talking about.
Every person who claims spontaneous salvation is, in effect, claiming that Jesus was mistaken.
