It's been raining lately, so I invited my friend to go fishing at 7 o'clock in the morning today, which is earlier than usual for me.

This morning we finally got started, and for the longest time we had no luck catching anything but moss. But then this guy comes along and first cast... He reels in a monster bass. I ask him what he's using, and he told me a spin bait. So I obviously pulled that out of my tackle and started going at it...

A few hours go bye, and I've caught a few 9-12 inch bass. Nothing too big. And just before I decide to leave, I thought I would throw on a buzz bait around this stump, and first cast I got a bite, but nothing... Second cast, nothing... Third cast, I nearly landed what appeared to be at least a 12 pound bass. Biggest thing I've ever seen at our lake. And wouldn't ya know it... I got it right up to the shore, and pulled it out of the water (without a net), and before I could grab on to it's mouth, it squrimed itself off my hook, into the water...

My dad tells me that everyone has a "fish that got away" story. I didn't think I'd be one telling this story. But when you live where I do, and the fish you pull out are usually smaller than your hand, it's something to talk about!

How was your day fishing?

Congrats! That is awesome! A 12 lb'er on a buzzbait would be a great day of fishing in anyones book! Even if the bass got a reprieve, you still have bragging rights to hooking the biggest bass you've seen in that lake. I imagine after your friend left he went back to that spot with a buzzbait...if he calls you later on today and tells you he caught it in the same spot are you going to believe your friend? It is amazing how strong those giant bass really are.

This evening I plan on getting out and seeing what's biting. The bass in my pond outback (small 2 acres) have been jumping like crazy all afternoon. Too bad I have work to do.

Thanks for the inspiring story. Next time you will land that bass! Have a great weekend.

well i went fishing in a small pond and caught numerous bluegill and 3 cats all of them blue. had another blue get off at the shore kinda like your bass but he broke my line. i was mainly using nightcrawlers but used some worms too. also what got 'em going was i took a dinner roll broke it into small chunks and threw them out there.

wow, and i've already been wanting to go fishing! thanks for sharing your story, and yeah we all have a "the one that got away" story. but, it really sucks when it actually happens.

i had one once that had straightened my hook out to the point that it came off right at the shore. no net either, and i wasn't fishing for bass either, and had a smaller hook on.
