in my personal experience... nearly brand new computer, common hardware, and powerful enough - I didn't have any problems with Vista (either upgrading or clean install (recommend clean install))... but on other computers that are older or have been used for quite some time, or computers that have cheaper components that are no longer supported (usually by manufacturers that no longer exist) there can be quite a few problems... so my advice... always do a clean install... always investigate your current hardware (run the Vista Upgrade Adviser to find if you can upgrade or not)... check with the manufacturer of your computer and see if they're making Vista drivers available for download (and if so, download the drivers BEFORE you install vista (in case you won't be able to get online with vista due to missing drivers)

and then be honest with yourself... do you NEED vista right now? or could you wait until you're going to buy a new computer... if you have to have it now be honest with yourself as to whether or not your current computer can run it... and if it can will it run it in a way that is "usable". if its the $299 Dell special... if its 3+ years old... if you bought it at a garage sale... don't waste your time

XP is good if you want reliability. Vista is a systems hog and you may need a lot of upgrades (memory, video card, maybe even processor). I like xp much more if you want to sacrifice looks. Microsoft really bombed with vista. They basically copied os x and made windows a lot harder to use.

ps if ur fed up with windows get a mac!
