I have an Acer ScanPrisa 640P with parallel port connection. I have recently managed to obtain the driver for the scanner, which was compatible with Windows XP. Earlier, my OS would not detect the presence of the scanner. Since installing the new driver also did not help, I took the advice of a forum and changed my 'BIOS settings' so that the LPT port worked on 'EPP'. Now, I managed to get the computer to detect the scanner (it's still not present in the 'Device Manager' however.) Now, everytime I try to obtain an image from the scanner, the image-editing program (such as Adobe Photoshop and ImageReady) that I have open at the time closes immediately after the MiraScan splash screen is shown. It only seems to work in Microsoft Word, and even then the quality is not good. What's going on, and how do I fix it? Arghs, this scanner's causing me a lot of pain. =( Thanks for any help! =)

it could be a number of reasons

1)the motherboard.. can u try a different setting, i know theres epp .. and epp + blah blah..

2)the scanner drivers may not be so great or the twain driver

i had to give away a paralell port scanner due to them not updating the drivers for xp.. would be better off getting a USB 2 scanner, such as a canon lide like me for 2 reasons 1)drivers for xp that don't mess up the pc 2)powered via usb, so another plug saved..

as for your editing program, perhaps it don't like the twain driver...

download this >

try using that to scan.. and save out as tiff etc, then use your main program to do the actual editing =)

it takes far less resources than photoshop

also if your memory is low, that doesn't help with scanning.. less than 512mb system ram on an xp pc isn't so good.

Do you have any idea how old the technology is that you are dealing with? Strongly recommend you spend the $65 or so to get a modern USB machine that will be detected automatically and give you better resolution and more controls.
