My kids wear their shoes socks sometimes until bedtime. I was brought up like this and so was my wife however it seems that kids go barefoot now of days or wear sandles and flipflops. Are we the only family that wear shoes and socks most of the time? Does anywone else fell that shoes and better for kids to wear over flipflops or sandles?

It's fine for children to go barefoot sometimes if it is safe to do so - the air is good for their feet and there should be no socks on in bed either.
Sandals are fine too for the beach and so on.
But for walking children should have properly-fitted shoes worn with socks for hygeine purposes and on hot days a change of socks and footwear after feet washing is needed too.
Best wishes,
Joan.

When they were littler, my kids wore shoes and socks because shoes have more support. But now my teens wear flip flops most of the time. Mostly this is because when they wear shoes with socks, their feet just get too stinking hot-and I do mean stinking! :0) Even when we buy tennies, we make sure to find some that are well ventilated. Also, it makes it a lot easier when they go into the pool several times a day. I'm also not a big fan of shoes in the house, so the flip flops make it easier just to slip off and on.

We don't wear shoes in the house. Our guests take their shoes off at the door and either go barefoot or in their socks, too.

During the summer the kids and I wear sandals or crocs. None of us has had a pair of socks on for at least a month and a half now :-) My husband wears boots to work but when he's not working he wears flipflops. I go outside barefoot most of the time, only wear shoes when I go somewhere that requires them.

I guess everyone's just different...one of the kids I babysit can't stand to take her socks off for even a minute.

It's just a personal preference. Flip flops are made a lot better now than they used to, and they're also a lot more stylish now. Living in the South during the sweltering summer heat and humidity, I wear nothing but flip flops. My feet need to breath. I would imagine kids would like the same amount of comfort. When running or walking for long distances, shoes and socks are definitely better. For everyday use though, flip flops are more convenient and more comfortable (if you're willing to pay enough for a good pair). Cuts down on laundry too.

My son normally has socks on in the house, due to the fact he has large feet. He is 15 and is a size 14. He thinks they are ugly so he keeps them covered. He has never liked sandles because it shows his feet

My daughter cant stand socks, and its a battle daily to get her to wear them in the winter. She is so thankful to have nice weather return. She is barefoot inside and sandals out.

I myself hate socks as well. I will wear them with sneakers, but in the house I'm barefoot. Out i wear sandals until the snow flies.................. I have extreme swelling in my feet it feels better without shoes on. I wear pantyhose to work, and i take my dress shoes off in my office. My office is carpeted, I put them back on to leave the office.

I have a no shoe rule in the house, It cuts down on soil on the floors. Tracked in from outdoors... They can wear clean house shoes if they wish just not outdoor shoes...... Those are kept in the sun room and put on before going out. My sun room has an exit to the garage and to the back yard.

Small children learn to walk better barefoot. Beyond that, I don't think it matters IMO.

We are a barefoot-in-the-house family. If we're not going to be walking around for a long period of time, we're in flip-flops. Socks and shoes are for school/camp/mall/outings in our house. I'm barefoot whenever possible, personally. You're well within your rights to prefer your children wear shoes, but I can't agree with you that it's 'better' than flipflops.

If they aren't uncomfortable wearing shoes and socks all day, that's fine. However, as soon as I walk in the door, the shoes come off, no matter if they are sneakers or flip-flops. I use to run around barefooted everywhere I went. Shoes are constrictive and hot to me. I like to wiggle my toes.

I let my some wear what he wants most the time on his feet. He has a choice of crocs or regular shoes. However I do ask that he takes them off in our house because it extends the life of carpet. I do however think it is better for him to walk around barefoot when possible and safe just because it lets his feet breath and grow.

I grew up wearing socks and shoes, we did not take our shoes off until bed time. I have friends who always have their socks and shoes on all the time too. I don't wear shoes in the house anymore, and neither does my husband. And my little girl definitely doesn't, as soon as we get home she takes off her shoes and her socks, she hates wearing socks around the house, even when it's cold and she sees shoes as something to only wear outside. Do whatever you are comfortable with, if your family prefers to keep their shoes on, then that's fine.

I agree with you that shoes with socks are better for a child's growing foot than flip-flops and sandals with no arch support. However, I think it's important for your kids to feel comfortable especially if all their friends are wearing the latest fashions in summer footwear (especially girls). I'd make exceptions when they're with their friends and not hiking or playing sports where shoes are very important.
