Extremely irritating problem with subtitles for divX, please help!!!?

Question

I have a few divX movies for whom i downloaded subtitle files. my problem is that though the subtitles run with the movies, the timing is a bit off. for some movies, the subtitles appear a few seconds earlier, while for others, they appear a few seconds later. i cant correct this. im totally stumped. please help!

Keep in mind that subtitles are specific to a version of the film. Any editing, trimming of title or credits, and such, can throw off the timing.
