Strange thing happened to my rod. I was using it off the family sunfish sailboat, and an approx ten-pound fish was hooked. I started reeling in, but I didn't feel any weight. I reeled in some more, and finally realized that I wasn't reeling. After cursing for a few second, I tossed the rod to the side, and started taking in the line with my hands. I finally caught and released the fish, but I was confused on the rod. Once I got back to shore, I did a bit of testing. The rod can reel in so long as the weight is less then seven pounds. It's a ten-year-old rod, and I'm wondering if there's any hope for it. I suppose something broke, but does anyone know if I can fix it myself? I realize it's difficult to explain without the rod in front of you, but if someone can give me some suggestions, that would be awesome. Should I replace, take it to a fix-it shop, or can the fix be done myself? If you need pictures, I will take and send them. Thanks to all in advance!

You need a new reel dude. The good news is that you can get a decent reel for relatively litle cash. Do yourself a favor and get a new one instead of trying to save a few bucks and putting yourself through hell. :)

BTW, I'm assuming you checked the drag?

Depending on what kind of reel you have, I am guessing that your reel has a drag setting on it and that the drag is set too light. Some reels' drag works differently than others. I would suggest that you take it to your local tackle shop and explain to them what it is doing and then they should be able to help you with your problem. Good Luck To You. Also, you can check out the bulletin board at the website i have listed for my source.

Your drag seems too loose. Tighten the drag by turning the top clockwise. Check it by pulling out line with your hand. If the line comes out too easy tighten the drag some more. If it's tough to pull out line, loosen the drag a bit.

does it make a buzzing sound? if so you may just need to adjust the drag setting.
