Take him back to the vets to have this wound checked, it should not be swollen or so sore after 3 days. Not surprised he won't let you ice it, it's delicate!

Your vet can give you anti-inflammatory medication to ease the discomfort and make the swelling go down, but you need to be sure this wound isn't infected. Swelling is a sign of infection. If pus or any kind of discharge from the wound area appears, it is definitely infected! The dog should have received antibiotics at time of op to prevent this happening. Has he been licking the wound at all? They sometimes do this when they're feeling uncomfortable, but it introduces infection.

I think it's worth having this wound looked at.

Some swell a little more than others. Some swelling, although alarming looking, is really nothing to worry about. The big things you need to watch for is if the scrotum (bag) that is left loks like it is filling with blood, and also keep an eye on any redness or pus-looking seepage that could signal infection. Make sure he can't lick or chew the surgery area. If you are worried at all, feel free to call your vet and describe the area to him/her. If they feel it is in the least worrisome, they'll have you bring him in for a look. Don't worry too much. He'll be fine as long as he has you to love him. :-)

I just had my dog neutered last Monday. It is a minor surgery for males. If your dog is showing pain, your vet should be able to give him pain medication. Cost about $20.
Swelling went down about 4 days after surgery. I wouldn't put ice on it. My dog just laid on his back with his legs spread under the fan.

Are you wrapping the ice in a towel first? If you're trying to put an ice pack on straight, he won't let you because it's just too cold!! If he were to get infection, it would be very red and puffy looking - you'd know. I've never had a male who needed anything for pain - it's such a minor procedure for a male. If your dog seems to be in a lot of pain, you should call the vet and let him know.
