My guess is that the head unit has an illumination feature that dims the display when the vehicle's lights are on.

Usually head units with this feature have an "illumination" setting in the setup menu that lets you turn it off. If not, remove the head unit and disconnect the ORANGE or ORANGE/WHITE wire at the back (it should have one or the other, not both). This is the input that tells the unit when the lights are on; if you disconnect it, it will assume the lights are off at all times.

You're talking about keeping a DVD player running while you drive right? There is usually a wire that goes to the emergency brake, in your case maybe it goes to the lights? Usually you need to ground that wire and the system will stay on. I doubt it's legal though so you may want to check that out.
