My dog is an American Eskimo, and is 16, almost 17 years old. He has always been an outside dog. The last 4 or so years however, we have taken two large dog kennels and put them face to face with a bed inside, so we can bring him inside during the night so he will sleep on the soft bed and we can put a small fan on for him. We live in Las Vegas, NV, so the fan is very important during summer. I also try to wet him down a couple of times each day, and I have tried to cut his hair, but he doesnt sit still long enough for me to cut more than half of his hair.
My family and I are going on vacation for 4 days to California this weekend. We will have somebody watch him, but we arent sure if we should trust our friend down the street to come over and wet him down a couple of times a day(maybe he would if we call each day and remind), or if we should take him to the vet for the 4 days. My fear with the vet is that it will be too traumatic for him at such an old age. Any advice?

My dog isnt very playful, due to his old age, and the pool would be nice if he liked water, and he would most likely have trouble getting in and out. Do they do any grooming at the pet hotels? Being outside, and due to the pigeon infestation, every day when I bring him in he has pigeon poop on him. Again due to his long hair and tendancy to move around so he doesnt get sore, its hard to get all of it out. Do they clean or shave dogs?

I have a 15 yr old dog and I know it would be VERY traumatic for him to be taken to even the nicest type kennel. Dogs that old get nervous and upset easily, lots like old people.
The best deal would be a trusted friend or family member who would stay at your house or at least be there for a number of hours each day.
The next best thing would be a pet sitter. Problem with a pet sitter is they will usually only come twice a day and if you can get them to come a 3rd time, it will get very expensive.
If you really don't think this person down the street will remember to care for your dog, the 3rd option is to find a boarding kennel. Don't take him to one of those that have all the dogs running loose. An old dog is not going to like that at all. If you have left him with the vet before, that would be best because he at least will be somewhere familiar. Also, the dog will be safe there. Maybe not real happy and maybe stressed, but safe.

why don't you ask your vet about a good pet sitter. Then you could pay the pet sitter to come and stay with your dog at your house... Or at least come over 3-4 times a day and wet the dog, let it in at night, out in the morning, etc...
That way, the dog stays at home, and you know the dog will be taken care of.
Good luck.

My sister lives in Las Vegas NV! When she came to visit me she left her dog in a Dog Hotel. They have the dogs in their own rooms and people come in to feed them. You as the owner can call in to check on her and see how she's doing. Sometimes they even have the employees play with the dogs for a bit a little! It's a great way to leave your dog, plus they won't be bored. Good Luck

If your leery about trusting your neighbor, there has to be someone, a close friend, to help out. My sister takes care of her friends' two dogs when they go on vacation, and they actually let her stay at the house so the dogs always have full attention. If you have a trustworthy friend who you will let stay at your house with the dog, I suggest you do that instead of taking him to the vet. I know my dog wouldn't be so happy about the vet.

Get someone to stay at your house. That would be the best thing for the dog and for you.Just make sure you can trust that person to stay in your house.
Dogsitter/Housesitter are great. My dogs love all the attention and they play a lot.

If you want to leave him at home, then hire a professional petsitter instead, they won't forget about him. Call your vet they could probably recommend someone
