The origin comes from shamanic belief. That there are spirits around that can help us. Shamans go back to the stone age when hunter gatherer tribes would have a shaman call on the nature spirits to help in the hunt. Shamans where also healers, using the plants to ease pain and suffering of tribe members. All religion starts here. Shamans evolved as the tribe did, becoming priest to what ever deity was worshiped, as well as a teaching role in education(Druid schools where sought after by Greeks in teaching their sons). There was a time when the Hebrew people were polytheist as well, having Yahweh in a chief god role with many sub-gods.

Most are far older than Christianity and as they were persecuted by Christians for so long much of their history has been lost.

Wicca is a neo-Pagan faith which blends elements of various ancient Pagan faiths.

I'm a Celtic Pagan so I follow the religion of the Ancient Celts.

Are you interested in a particular kind of Paganism? The word Pagan is a blanket term for hundreds if not thousands of religions. It basically means anyone who does not follow one of the 3 main Abrahamic religions.

There is no Pagan religion!

Its a term used by Christians to refer to all Non-Christian peopls in its original usage. So that includes all you Muslims and Jews as well! Generally it is used for people who follow their old religion before the time of the Witch Burning
(Where was God's love back then?)! Another steriotyping tactic

There are many different pagan faiths.

Asatru (heathenry) is a "reconstructionist" religion... it seeks to restore, as best it can, the indigenous faith practices of the northern european peoples before the rise of Christianity.

As to the original source of heathenry... it is not a revealed religion, it is a folkway developed slowly over a long period of time thru the customs and culture of the peoples who practiced it.

There are many Pagan religions and their origins go back to pre-history.

My own path is based largely on the writings of Homor and Hesiod among others, but the religion they spoke of was already heavily influenced by nomadic invaders from the north and west. (they brought Zeus but were kind enough not to drive out the existing deities)

Pagans

The universal, eternal acknowledgment that there has to be a superior being somewhere, and all of this could have happened by itself.
Also, it all cannot end with death, therefore, there must be more.
So,regardless of what they called it, it was a religion.
Lastly, no one nowadays will call any religion "pagan." It is not PC.

Nature.

'Pagan' isn't a single religion, but a number of non-christian religions that were centered around nature, the seasons and the earth which were popular in northern europe before Christianity moved in and called them all 'devil worshipers' in order to discredit them. Most didn't believe in any concept similar to 'the devil'.

Nature! The earliest humans were impressed by the force of the elements, and how these could be harnessed, e.g. controlling fire, using water to turn a wheel, etc.
