They were members of the one Church founded by Jesus Christ, which was calling itself "the Holy Catholic Church" by the end of the First Century, and which still calls itself by that name today. We know this from the writings of the earliest Church Fathers, the second generation leaders of the early Church, who were taught and ordained by the Apostles themselves. The earliest written reference to the name is found in the writings of Ignatius, first Catholic bishop of Antioch, who was taught and ordained by the Apostle John, and who wrote of "the Holy Catholic Church" in 107 AD. No-one who lived before the 16th Century was Protestant.

I am a protestant and I do not. Anyone who would say that they were is lacking in knowledge. The protestant movement came about when Christians began to descent against the universal authority of the Pope. In other words, Christian rebellion against the Catholic church. Peter and Paul would have had no Catholic church to rebel against. Although I must add that they probably would have had a problem with some Catholic practices and doctrines. God bless!!!

No they are counted as Christians. It would be hard for them to be Catholic or Protestant since they lived in a time before those distinctions existed.
