Great, good for you! And btw, that is illegal. The neighbor and/or the kids' parents could be held responsible for the kids doing that if you had called the cops.
So... Your cat is probably not afraid of them, exactly. She is worried about her place in the home and in your affections. She is worried about them being young and strong and potentially taking her place in the pecking order.
Reassure her a lot! Never let her see you pet a kitten unless you pet her too. Make her see that you still love her and that her place is safe. Give her treats that are just for her. That kind of thing. And if she gets a little hostile, don't scold her or take the kittens away from her. Even if it looks a little scary. She has to go through a process with them. It's natural and instinctive.
She won't be happy for a time, but she'll come around, Ok?
Enjoy all your babies. You all have my best wishes.
Oh, btw, she'll need a vet visit, as well as the kittens. She might need a wormer, etc.

I can't blame your cat! Five kittens can be torture to cats because they are very territorial. Your cat is probably feeling that his space was invaded. If he is a lot older, he will also hate the energy of younger kittens.
Could you separate the kittens from the cat? If they can smell one another out at first and each group has its own "space," tensions should lower slightly. Walking away is actually pretty tame. I am worried that the cat may try to fight with the kittens or vice versa. (Not that the kittens could really hurt the cat, but they might drive him crazy!)
That was nice of you to save the kittens. Good luck! :)

Cats need territory. In the wild they hunt for their food which means they fight over the best hunting areas. In your house you are the food source and the house is the food territory. Your cat's territory has just been invaded by a gang of kittens. Still, after a while your cat will likely adjust.
On the other hand 6 cats is a lot in one space. If you don't have a large house and/or yard, you may not be doing the cats or yourself a favor by keeping all of them.
Most people who collect cats do so with the best of intentions, however, too many cats in one place is not healthy. It leads to behavioral disorders, unsanitary conditions, and the spread of diseases. The best thing you can do is find good homes for strays if you already have cats at your house.
And please get your cats spayed and neutered. The number of animals that are euthanized because of overpopulation is truly sad. Best of luck with your cats.

I had my older cat Katie and I brought in a kitten Rosie and Katie the adult cat did the same thing, she hid for two weeks, and finally she got sick of hiding under the bed and 9 years later they are great friends, if you accidentally step on Rosie, Katie comes running to check on Rosie! :)

How old is your cat ?, was your cat an underdog with with his Kitten brothers and sisters, do you pay more attention to the kittens than your cat. Well your cat is jealous and can't stand the kittens, so he stays away. Cat's can be nasty with adult cats but not with kittens.

Because the little things can be very annoying, wanting to play and pull and prod...LOL...that would be my guess. My dog used to hide from our kittens to make them leave him alone. I would show him/her a bit more of attention too, they can be jealous of new members coming into the home.
