get it looked at-it could be anything from a few pounds to hundreds-so it is worth getting a techie in-they will price the repair if its not worth it you can make the decision to get rid. re: the comments about plasmas not lasting 25 years-while i agree with this a good quality set can (if it has been looked after) realise 60.000 hours-thats 12 to 17 years use on four hours a day. it is worth noting that plasmas do start to deteriorate after 2000 hours or so-but not by any noticable margin. so i would take a lot of what is said against plasma with a pinch of salt-in fact my local bar has had a philips plasma installed since 2000 and it is still as good as the day it was put up on the wall-during a recent cricket match the picture had to be adjusted as it was too bright!!.

That's really how long they last. Once they die, they cannot be repaired. There may be some issue causing the TV to not work, like power cord problems, etc. But chances are, it's done.

I sell them. The factory reps come in and tell us they last 25 years, but I'm afraid that's all BS. Plasmas are a fairly new technology as TV's go and most don't last very long. I've had customers whose TV's died after 6 or 7 years. Especially if you whitewash often to take off your burn in. That can decrease the lifespan more than most people realize. Just be glad you had it for as long as you did.

I'm afraid excessive burn in/whitewash issues may not be covered by a homeowner's. Manufacturers consider that abuse. Check if your policy covers abuse.

Plasmas are like ipods- the value of the thing is in the name and being able to tell others you have one. Go for LCD. It's worth it. The old Gameboys, etc, were LCD screens and you can still find working models in thrift stores this much later.

If you really bought a plasma back in 1996 (9 years ago), you must have paid a little fortune, so I am sure you can afford a new one!
They are now 1/10 of the price back then. Better panels, more colors, better blacks!

Check-out the small print on your household policy, you MIGHT be lucky. I was in the central heating business and a customer got a new boiler when his old one leaked.
