My puppy is just about 13 weeks old. We got her last week from a breeder and boy did she smell! So we had given her a bath ( a quick one) which seem to help a little but now its been a week and she smells so bad again. Her smell is triggering my allergies and I have to keep changing my shirts b/c of her smell. Is it ok to give her a bath again? I am using a tearless puppy shampoo but I haven't used conditioner yet. Also has anyone heard of mixing a little touch of Downy and water to put on in the end? Oh, by the way, she is a Havanese (part of the bichon frise family). Could it be that puppies smell more than adults? Any info would be greatly appreciated!:)

Okay here's your solution. Go buy a slicker brush, a metal comb, a detangler spray (or use water in a spray bottle)a puppy shampoo ( I like Zany's puppy shampoo as it has a clean baby smell) and conditioner. Brush and then comb out ALL matts using the spray. Then bathe in warm water and make sure you get the belly area where urine stays. Condition as per the directions and blow dry using the slicker brush again. Finally make sure the hair is trimmed back from the anus and genital area so that nothing clings to that area. If the odor still continues see a vet. Havanese have hair not fur so do not usually have much doggy odor if any at all. Puppies do have a natural breath smell, sort of faint skunk, that goes away in a couple of months. Use only products made for puppies for safety reasons. A havanese puppy can safely be bathed every two to three weeks after you have everything under control but remember to protect the eyes and ears. Use the slicker brush regularly to prevent matting. Good luck with your puppy. It is a fun breed. Also be sure to check the ears as puppy may have mites or an infection and that would smell bad.
PS Shame on any breeder who sends a new puppy home in a dirty condition.

It's pefectly fine to give her a bath again although the kennel she came from must not smell very good either. The puppy shampoo should work just fine. I would not use Downy on her. I would use either a puppy coat conditioner or the one I use for my own hair. Just a little dab should do it. Puppies usually smell less than adults because they don't have the adult hormones so, hopefully, your little girl will smell lots better after a thorough bath. There are also some dry shampoos that will help with the odor between baths.

yes you can bath her again, but you don't want to wash away the oils from her coat so if you are going to bath her often, don't use shampoo every time, only water. Even washing in just water may help the smell a little. Downy is not good for the skin, I wouldn't try that. you may have just got a smelly dog, she may start to smell better if you change her diet, she may have been eating something at the breeders that made her smell. Usually puppies smell better than adults.

Brush her first to get rid of excess hair. Outside best. Downy no! Not for a puppy. Later they tolerate our hair conditioner but never a fabric softener. I would buy the puppy stuff, shampoo and conditioner vs a sick tummy. It may be ok but?
I had two litters of 10 each lab pups for all 8 weeks til we weened them. Give her treats after. Make sure the water is warm, no shower the noise bugs them. U will need to get her happy about a bath now cuz she needs them. Powders help too in between. Good luck & enjoy.

Puppies usually do have a bit of a puppy odor to their breath, but I can't say that I have noticed an extra odor to their bodies. I have not heard of using Downy as a pet shampoo. I would suggest going to the pet store and looking for a tear less puppy shampoo.

yes you can actually use Downy Fabric Softener you put an inch of downy in a gallon of water.
I learned this at the Ne York School of Dog Grooming.
Try to bath her a little less than once a week as it could dry the hair and skin out.
You may want to have her anal glands checked as well as her skin to make sure there is a health reason for the odor.

Also it's best to blow dry and brush after the brush.
Good luck

All puppies smell I know what you mean! Dont wash your puppy more than once a week. But in one bath condition her. At the pet store in the grooming section, they sell a finishing spray that smells very nice and is perfectly safe. Also, if it is easier, wash your puppy in the sink! haha thats what I use to do till he grew and is now 130 lbs!

ok, you shouldnt use a shampoo or conditioner because it can be harmful to a puppy, at about 6 mnths you can start usingflea medication, shampoo, and conditioner on your pet, unless otherwise instructed by your vet. Hope it helped
