this morning we heard a strange noise coming from our fireplace. We noticed 4 baby birds and half of their nest on the floor of the fireplace. How can we get them back to their parents who by the way are flying around like crazy outside. we know that we cant touch them,. right? i don't want them to starve to death.

The idea that birds will abandon their babies if they smell human scent on them is one of the biggest and most persistent myths about birds. Simply put, birds do not have an acute sense of smell. Wildlife biologists and bird banders handle baby birds with their bare hands all the time, and when they return the babies to the nests, the parents do NOT abandon them. You can see pictures here:

Place the babies outside, in a shelterd area, perhaps in a box with the pieces of nest in it, securly fastened to a tree or high shrub. the parents will attend to the babies as soon as they can find them, so make sure wherever you put them, mom and dad will be able to hear them. Birds recognize each other by sound, not sight, so it doesn't matter if the babies are not in full view.

It is a myth that you cannot touch birds without endangering them. What you need to do, if the birds are fully feather, is take them outside and place them near a shrub close to were the parents are hanging out. They will take care of them from that point. If they don't, and I understand this is hard to accept, they will simply become part of natures food chain. All bird species continue to feed young after they have left the nest. Some Raptor species ( hawk's, etc ) will feed their young for as long as 6 months to a year.

I believe the bird species you have are Chimney Swifts.

If you feel too uncomfortable to do the things mentioned call your local Audubon Society.

Use gloves, no human smell. Put them outside where the parents are and hope they'll accept them back.
