My Shih Tzu will be 2 in mid-August and lately she smells soooo bad! Example, last night she had a bath, but the stink doesn't go away. It isn't her ears & it isn't a poop smell, but it is unbareable! She is shaved so it isn't her coat either. I did notice while shaving her last night she has some brown spots (looks like dried mud, but doesn't wash off) on her belly and while she was on her back the smell was much worse. I am thankful for all help! At this moment I don't have money to take her to a vet, but I have 2 boys and a 4 mo old girl & we can't take the smell any more! Thank you all!

It could be something as simple as her anal glands need to be expressed. If you've never done it before, your much better off taking her to the vet to get it done. And if it's something serious, she'd need to see the vet for that, too.

I would suggest taking her to a groomers, they can do a better job with her than you'd be able to yourself.. They have the supplies and materials to deal with such issues so the groomers would be your best bet. What state do you live in? I work at a groomers shop in Arizona and for Shih Tzu's we charge (I believe) between 25 - 35 depending on the condition and grooming work. A B&B (bath and brush) is the cheapest but if you want any grooming done the price will rise depending on what you want done. At my shop regular grooming includes: bathing, brushing, trim up, ears, nails, sanitary, pads and eyes.. We also have perfume for those who want it on their dogs. I hope this helps.... If she is still bad after having taken her to the groomers then I would make an appointment with the vet, but I'm sure the groomers will do the trick. If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask..

Good luck with your puppy.

I had a shih tzu who was smelly too. The problem for our dog was her face. Shih tzus are prone to allergies and runny eyes. I had to gently scrub the area between her nose and eyes with dog baby shampoo. You will have to dry the area completely with a towel and blow dryer. That fix will last for about a week. The most important part is to completely dry the hair on the face.

Sounds like some kind of dermatitis; this can be related to allergies, irritants, or even heat rash. You might also want to check for a urinary tract infection, vaginitis; or, if she's not spayed, mammary infection or uterine infection.

I'd suggest a visit to the vet to pinpoint the source of the odor. Short of that, a bath with shampoo containing chlorhexidine may help, but it may not solve the problem. Good luck!

Hi there.
If your dog has bad breath, it could be kiddney problems, Take you pet to the vet and have it checked out, Most vet will let you make payment on the bill, on that spot under her belly, It might be a hot spot, I use sea breeze and it work very well.
Good luck

most dogs have odor problems.
for example my dog does have odor problems so we let him stay in the backyard more and we give him baths but he tames to dry him self outside on the fresh grass.so the keys is to let them be in fresh air and let nature do its wonderful organic magic.also in hot summer times just put the dog in a cool shower with out any soap and after wards let it go out side and run , that should keep cool for a while.let it run through the sprinklers.

Suggest you find the money for a vet. No one on the internet can possibly diagnose what is wrong with your dog. She needs a vet.

I know you said you can't but only a vet will be able to tell you about her odor. If she hasn't gotten into anything it's being caused from something internal that may need medication.
