"The book is frequently called "Revelation"; however, the title found on some of the earliest manuscripts is "The Apocalypse/Revelation of John" (ΑΠΟΚΑΛΥΨΙΣ ΙΩΑΝΝΟΥ), and the most common title found on later manuscripts is "The Apocalypse/Revelation of the theologian" (ΑΠΟΚΑΛΥΨΙΣ ΤΟΥ ΘΕΟΛΟΓΟΥ).[1] Many people call The Book of Revelation "the revelations" or "revelations", which are incorrect; there was only one known revelation recorded in the author's manuscript. The first sentence of the book, The Revelation of Jesus Christ ... unto his servant John, is also sometimes used as a title"

I have some books by Grant R. Jefferey that were very interesting reads and provide a lot of the answers you are looking for. It's just way too much to type here! The two that will help you the most, though are "The Signature of God" ($13.99 US - that's the best read, for me) and "War on Terror - Unfolding Bible Prophecy" ($12.99 US - that one is more specific to one prophecy, but elaborates into some interesting detail).
One thing I heard recently was that the prophecy about Iran and Russia making an alliance (which was translated that way MANY years ago) has finally come true, despite everyone's prediction that it would never happen.
Also, Israel becoming a nation again "in one day" was foretold. Not in revelation, but The Signature of God goes talks about that too, and how nobody had ever seen a nation built in one day at that time, and therefor disbelieved it - but it came to pass on May 15, 1948.
Also, if you wan to get into the archaeological, The Signature of God talks about the walls of Jericho. The evidence shows that the walls fell outward - interesting, considering the walls of every other ancient city that have been discovered fell INWARDS, as invading armies pushed their way into the city.
It also talks about the temple being rebuilt in the last days. It mentions it in Isaiah 2:2, and also, in the book of Revelation, John tells us that the angel took him into the future to measure the Temple that will exist during the seven-year tribulation period. There has been talk in Israel recently, of rebuilding the temple.
I do strongly recommend reading The Signature of God. I could hardly put it down, it was fascinating!

Read the Book and the footnotes you'll find at the bottom of each page.
This is about the most balanced approach you're likely to find on the matter.
There's no end to wacko interepretations of this book ... many of them by proven false prophets, who revise their prediction times and time again ... only to come up totally wrong again.

My understanding it was near the end of John's life, he was the only Apostle not killed, and the weather was really bad.
