How do I retrieve diagnostic codes from a 1997 Nissan 240SX?

Question

I don't have fancy equipment- can't I just jump two of the wires in the diagnostic port to retrieve trouble codes via flashes of the check engine light? I've done it on other cars, but I don't have the book for this one. The check engine light is on, so I know that it has thrown a code.

I believe that autozone will also read the codes for you for free when you go to their store. good luck.

There is a small screwdriver slot on the engine control computer You turn carefully clockwise to the stop the red and green LED's flash once then twice then three times carefully turn the slot counter clockwise and watch the code flash 10's and units each code will display 3 times then the next code. On some computers there is a label with the code numbers. Your car is OBDII compatible Auto Zone and other parts stores will read the code free and tell you the definition. While there write down the freeze frame data. I just hope your code is not the EGRC solenoid It is buried behind the intake manifold.

under the dash by the gas pedal going towards the center of your car is the ecm use a screw driver and turn the box setting clockwise hold for two seconds then turn completly counterclockwise and read the check engine flashes and if you have done it before you know how to read the flashes
