Several brands of DVD players claim to "upconvert" video format from 480i to either 720p, 1080i or 1080p. "Oppo" is one such brand. Does it live up to the hype?

They work, but do you need one if you have an HDTV?
Unless you really buy a very high-end DVD player, your TV can probably do a much better upconversion (it is done automatically in all HDTVs) .
So, save your money for a true HD Player.

Just make sure the "Oppo", under tech. specs, says, "will convert to 1080i" or something like that.
Try downloading the owners manual for the product.
It's usually a little long to read the .pdf file but it should tell you what this dvd player can do.

Good Luck!

Just make sure you have HDMI input on your TV to get the most out of the player. Using component cables (RGB) only allows you to go up to 480i. HDMI will allow for 720 and 1080, depending on what your TV is.
