I've been attending a Christian church for the past year in the hopes that a belief in God will finally click with me. So far, it hasn't. Sometimes I hear things that make it seem like He is existential, and other times I hear things that disprove His existence. Do you have any suggestions for reading material that can help me in my search for God? Is there anything in the world that could not exist without a Maker? I am very confused and hope that soon I will be able to fully believe in God and Christ. If you have any information that can lead me to believe this, then I would appreciate it.

I grew up in a religious home. Went through my life wondering what was wrong with me because I didn't feel the whole spirit thing that everyone else talked about. I never found thier god. There are no conclusive proofs for the existence of god -- and if there was one found, I doubt it would prove the Christian version of god (above all the other religions).

In greek mythology, you don't have to really beleive, just do the right thing. I just posted a question asking why people don't believe in greek mythology, although it has as much proof as christianity. With so many gods, you could choose who had the best beleif system, and worship only the gods that were involved with YOU. Honestly, it seems alot better than the uptight christian beleif. Give it a try! You might like it, and you don't have to stick with it if you don't.

I had a personal encounter with God where my life was radically changed forever when I wasn't expecting it and I didn't even know such a thing was possible. One day in total despair, at the end of my rope, I fell on my face and started crying, when a voice spoke into my heart these words:
"Maybe Jesus really did die for your sins"
Instantly a total transformation came over me, and the darkness in my soul was driven out by a flood of love and peace and hope and forgiveness and acceptance and understanding, and I knew for the first time, it was really true, and God had forgiven me. I was born again!

An awesome book chalked full of answers for your question...Systematic Theology by Wayne Gruber...
Good Stuff!!!!
I have question for you.....
1. Do you truly believe that long, long ago there was a man who walked the Earth who called himself Jesus ?...
Good
2. Do you believe this man died ?...
Good
3. Do you believe this same man who died-(ceased to live, stabbed in the heart 'till water and blood flowed out) rose again and appeared to more than 5000 people on more than one occasion, well documented (by the way) by people who were historians, non-Christian.?

If you have enough faith to consider the 3rd question a possibility....continue to pray, God will open your heart

You must find your own path; faith cannot be gotten from books. As to your question,God is a personality but non-physical in terms of our conception of physical reality. He is not an abstract but real phenomena like love, but there is an analogy in that love is not an object nor can it's existence be proven; yet we know from human behavior and foremost our own innermost feelings that it exists, and in a very real sense. The reality of humanity is different from the reality of entities - such as trees - that are without consciousness. Everything in the universe operates on a kind of clockwork structure,so there are many who extrapolate from that a creator.

HOpe that the place you are meeting at is not a poor representation of God. All christians are in the process of being tranformed from the old to the new .. so do not look for perfection in them. There is a man ... in the Bible.. a God-man named Christ Jesus Who spoke and testified and did works attesting to Who God is. Reading the gospels will give you a really clear picture on the existence of God through His Son Jesus. Even before reading the word it'll be worth while to pray and ask the Lord to unveil something to you. To infuse you with faith to believe to see what is in the word. Faith comes by hearing and hearing BY the Word of God. We do not naturally have it.
I have a helfpful site that goes into a life study of the bible that is really eyeopening and full of riches in Christ.
Might really be of use to you. It was to me in many ways

www.livingstreamministry.org

There is a study on each book of the bible that is unlike anything you will ever find out there in mainstream christianity... This sharing really hits the mark and brings its readers into something real and profound in Life.

THE best and most productive method of "knowing" God, (and I state it as such because if your looking to human understanding to "prove" God for you then your never going to find it...if it could be done...then everyone would have come to it already and we wouldn't be disussing this), is prayer...ask Him for wisdom, ask to know Him...

" faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. "

what your truely seeking isn't some evidence of God that you can hold in your hand and smell and taste and feel...but the faith that God gives you, that enables your senses to be surpassed by your spirit and finally see Him...

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God." Ephesians 2:8

Read your scriptures...pray for guidence...continue to knock and He will answer the door...

You know that light gives forth rays that go unseen throughtout creation...and yet you do not question their existence...so too, God "is", it is not that God can be said to "exist" for all existence is, because God "is"...he is the ground of all being, and being rests upon him...begin your search by first not seeking God within his own creation...for that creation only exists to proclaim His glory and point to Him...God is, creation only exists accoding to his willing it too.

Yes, there is loads of info all over the net, to take only a quick glance you will not see him but if you look hard and think hard you will see him, like look in the mirror and see how perfect we are, and how everything is in the right place, the bible says we are wonderfully and fearfully made. stop and think there is a designer

The real proof about God existence is that true believers are happier than not believers...

even if true believers can be not so bright or have other human problems as anyone else.

That also means that there are less true believers than most can think.
