Yes. I went to the Amish section of Pennsylvania before. I enjoyed the natural setting. Family and friends have a simplier life and work together. The Amish are usually happy no matter how life may go wrong sometimes.

The Amish built my garage last year , I live pretty far from where
they live so I offered to pick them up and give them a ride, I also offered to help them do errands when they needed to go somewhere that was too far for them . I even spent some time at the owners home helping him prepare material for the next days work. They worked from dawn to dust with very few breaks in brutal 90 degree weather.

I found them to be an honest , hard working , fun loving , peaceful people who pride themselves on a job well done. They are us, just without electricity and cars lol !

I even found myself envying the simple life they lead ,they live in a time long forgotten , We could learn from them and if one day the world goes to hell in a handbag and we lose all our petty conveniences and we are without the every day stuff we take for granted such as electricity and all our appliances that use it , running water will be history as well as all our indoor plumbing , No gas for our mighty vehicles and so on Amish life will go on pretty much unaffected !

On the really hot days I would fix them a lunch on my grill and invite them to eat indoors in the A/C (which the young ones really liked, As well as ogling my gorgeous 20 year old daughter LOL) . I even taught them how to play pool ! Don't worry there will not be an Amish billiards champ any time soon from what I saw LOL !

They seem to also have an inner family structure where everyone is taken care of by the ones who work such as the elderly , the sick and injured and such , no one does without in their community !

I have more but this is getting too long , I hope this helps !

Tom S - would love the simple life

I live in northern Indiana were there is a large Amish settlement (actually, I was in one of their communities yesterday). They are kind, hardworking, and basically gentle people. There is much about them I admire.

I disagree with their views on education (the Amish only attend school until eight grade or the age of 16). They believe in TOTAL conformity with their community. They are harsh in their discipline to maintain their social order.

They like to keep to themselves, and they never push their thoughts, opinions, or beliefs on anyone.

They do use some modern conveniences BTW. Many have phones, but not in the house. They will pay people to drive them to work (most here have factory jobs). Sometimes they will hire farm help who have tractors. Those who have businesses (like woodworking) often have generators to power the power tools.

But, they are good folk.

There are actually Amish people in San Diego. I think they go to at least one type of alternative Cancer clinic in Tijuana, so I have seen them around the San Diego area. I've never spoken to one, but they seem nice and well-mannered. I've seen that the ladies walk behind their men, maybe it's tradition? I once saw two couples early in the morning when they thought they were walking alone, the ladies seem to be playful, almost like teenage girls, behind their men.

If you look at the article here, you will see mention of Amish in Tijuana:

Yes, when I lived in Penn....some Amish owed the store next to my apt. and I got to know several...I went out to their home several times...it was amazing...at meal time all the MEN sit at this big table and the WOMEN serve them...I had alittle trouble with that...but the way they all work together was amazing...I also saw a barn raising...they are very special and peaceful people. I will never forget that experience.
