This is what the Bible says:

"For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."
Romans 15:4

"For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. They all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert.
Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry."We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. We should not test the Lord, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel.
These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come."
I Corinthians 10:1-11

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
II Timothy 3:14-17

the "Scriptures" here mentioned refer primarily to the Old Testament Scriptures.

The New Testament relies upon the Old Testament like the second story of a building depends upon the first story of the building.

the old testament is very important not only to the Jews but to Christians as well. The old Testament tells us of creation, the 10 commandments, the laws and moral codes we should follow. The old testament tells us the coming of Jesus. If there were no old testament there would be no Christianity. It's a very important book not only for religious reasons but it's very historical as well.

The Old anticipates the New
The New authenticates the Old
In the Old, the New lies hidden
In the New, the Old lies open

In the New,they are found

The Old predicts a person
The New presents that person

Jesus fully validated the Old Testament

Whoa, that is a big one! Yes, it was for the Jewish people, and Jesus was born a Jew, and Christians read both the Old and the New testaments for inspiration and understanding of the nature of God.
The Old Testament is full of the beauty of God's love for His chosen (and belligerent) people, and that love translates over into the New Testament with the birth of Jesus Christ, Who served as a sacrifice for all.
The Old Testament is good for reading and good for your soul.

The begining of time. Genesis is the first book in the old testament and it begins with "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

The Old Testament is the history of the Jewish people desperately trying to please God. We have that same story. All of our life, we strive to please God. The story tells our need for a Messiah. If we do not think that we need a Messiah, then we do not know why Christ came in the first place.

If your bible doesn't include the Old Testament it is incomplete. CHRIST refers to it many, many times. It contains the law, messages through the profits, valuable bible stories that relay GOD's messages of morals and love the explanation of creation and GOD's plan for us from the beginning. You can't believe in CHRIST without believing in the Old Testament or believe the Old Testament without believing in CHRIST for they are inner twined, one supports the other. The movement to exclude the Old Testament comes from people who live without boundaries, who want to base their faith on only one statement from CHRIST as to love your neighbor as yourself. But they ignore that he said do his father's will, To ignore the Old Testament would be as to start reading the most important book of your life at part 2.

Jesus said to keep the laws written in it. So that's it's purpose. It wouldn't have gotten added to the Bible if it wasn't important.
