I think he really believes in God. He has, as well as many of his predecessors, devoted his entire life to the fact that he believes in God. And keep in mind that the pope holds very little political power anymore. Influence among some of the church's followers... sure... but he can't make or break political policies. So what would be the point if he didn't believe it? While that, in itself requires a little faith in the general good of people, it does speak volumes about what he probably believes.

The Pope not only believes in God, but is God's only personally appointed representative to the human race. All of us of course can represent Christ to some degree in our lives. But only the Pope, the direct successor of Simon the Apostle, holds the keys to the kingdom, the universal symbol of supreme authority over God's people.

I believe that he is laughing all the way to the bank. You bet he believes in GOD but as long as you are buying your salvation with your 10% then he most definately believes in your blind dedication to his religion and cause. What happened to selling everything you have and giving it to the pore? Why don't we ever hear of any Catholic campaigns to end poverty or rightousness being the redistibution of wealth. Instead they advocate that you should convert every living soul to repent, fear damnation and give all that you can to the church or at least your 10%. Sure I think that he believes in GOD and until he goes to meet his maker he will do his part in portraying to be GOD as well.
