To answer your queston. I've had horribledepression since1981. I have chronic h/as. I do get pain medication. some times breakthru is terrible. I wait until I can't take it anymore before the er. treat me like ***t. You have to have your blood streaming before being taken seriously. I have followed the protocol, doesn't seem to help. I have had every therapy I can get. Thanks for the answers. I am really depressed and just about ready to hit the big one. AND NO I did not overtake my meds.

What is causing your chronic pain? You may want to look into a Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS)..it has helped me with my chronic pain a lot, but depending on what is causing yours it may or may not work for you. Here is the website to get more info from www.ans-medical.com

A couple of times I've had some issues with vomitting my pain meds or having pain that my breakthrough meds couldn't handle...I've never had a problem with getting pain releif at the ER, once I told them what meds I was on and what my chronic pain was from. Next time, call your pain management doc before going to the ER... even if it is after hours he will have an answering service that can page him or there will be some way to get in touch with him. Tell him what is going on, get his recommendcation and then if you have to go to the ER., tell them your doctor told you to come, give them his number and ask them to call him. Why ARE you out of medication? My doctor gives me a month's supply at a time and I also have meds for breakthrough pain... if your doc gives you a month's supply (and most do) there isn't any reason you should run out unless you're taking more than you're supposed to. Is there some other reason you don't have meds? If your medication isn't working you should talk to your doctor about changing it or the dose you take. The ER is not really a good choice for handling your pain, that's why you're in pain management to begin with.

Do you take meds to prevent headaches? I find my anti-deps help, and Neurontin works, too. Also, I try to keep my hormone level steady all month long by taking bcp 25 days/mo.
Are these headaches migraines? With my bad headaches, none of the meds you mentioned would even have touched the pain. At the first twinge of migraine coming ("drop in the stomach" nausea and sudden ha that progresses quickly) I take Maxault. It takes care of 85-90% of the symptoms. Two hours later if there are still symptoms, I can take another.
I don't know where you live, and I'm certainly not a medical professional, but I'm not amused with this protocol for handling pain. For one thing, we look and look to find reasons before we throw up our hands and say "painkillers for the rest of their lives."
Three more suggestions and then I'll shut up:
1. Acupuncture (very effective on this type of pain). It seems strange to us, but has been effectively treating diseases much longer than western medicine.
2. Chinese herbals Again, very effective.
3. Glenn King Institute This is a Japanese/Chinese ancient form of creating health by unblocking energy paths in your body by uniting them by touch. Painless, effective, but you may have to practice it yourself if the effects wear off. You'll have to look this one up on the net. Their office is in Carrollton, TX.
I hope you find a way to pain-free living. There is nothing more distressing and depressing than chronic pain that doesn't respond to pain-relieving measures.

For some alternatives to drugs, how about acupuncture? or whole-body therapeutic massage? look up on the computer for naturals herbs or supplements for the type of pain you have. Unless you can find out the root cause of the pain and fix it, you're going to have to try different things until you find something that works to relieve the symptoms

weird coincidence i was just reading some really interesting articles...
ok so this is a bit extreme but I just read an article saying marijuana is extremely useful for certain medical conditions...Here is another one on a similar topic since I can't find the original one I read.
http://serendip.brynmawr.edu/biology/b103/f01/web3/roth.html
this article gives information about what states it is legal in.

I don't really know much about it, but it is an interesting alternative.

Have you tried alternative methods? Accupuncture? Massage therapy? Yoga? What is your pain from and where is it? That will also make a big difference as to what the solution is.

good question. sometimes though there is no good answer. i have a family member in the same boat you are in and was told he'd just have to put up with it. that there was nothing that could be done about it.
