In every society and religion there are those who do take things to far. But those people are not the majority. And if u think about it people who do take things further than they should are not only from a christion backround, there are the Muslims ,athiests, satanists, etc.

It has something with rejecting Jesus atonement. That He shed His blood for remission of our sins. Usually when religious leaders teach that the cross & Jesus shed blood doesn't save anyone, they are turned over to a deception. This deception is named cults.

If you study any cult that has been suicidal, etc. (for instance the gateway purple triangle cult, who put bags on their head to catch a ride on commet hail bop). I looked on their web site, & their leader called the work Jesus did on the cross worthless. So? This is a key reason they were turned over to a deception.

Even the example of the people tatooing the 666. They reject the power of the cross too.

Because they were not truly believers in their Faith as preached. Some are con artists out to make money, others want glory and feel the way to do this to make headlines. And, unfortunately, death is the Best way to make headlines. The Bible tells us that Satan will lead others astray with different beliefs and religions. Unfortunately, this is turning out to be so true. Greed, pride and fame are dangerous virtues. Unfortunately most of our spiritual and governmental leaders have them in way too much abundance. Thanks for the question, and have a great day!

Because these ppl stop hearing the voice of God, and use the teacings of someone else to begin to think they are superior and then they get off track. Pride is an awful thing, and it will lead to all the other sins. When James Jones at Jonestown, or David Koresh at Waco began to think their teachings went above the word of God.... thats when the devil got in and just so messed them up. curse......
Noone is above the word of God. Noone. and when we think we are so smart or so powerful that we can have our own say in what is right and wrong, and not just hear Gods voice on things, we will always go wrong. This happens as the devil begins to creep in, ppl dont recognize it as such, usually from pride, and before you know it, they are no longer representing God, but themselves. When God said not to murder or molest chldren, any of that.. and these men will preach mass suicide or the beating or molesting of children, they are NO longer listening to God at all. They left God for the pride of SELF. Self is a bad thing, and thats why God requires us to lay it down and do it all His way.
Its the only way we can stay saved and in Gods abiding care and full protection. Obedience leads to blessing and disobedience leads to curse. Great question..

Jim Jones was just a crazy man. David Koresh had the right idea. He just went about it the wrong way, and people died, but not by his hand, by our Governments. Sad thing to happen. Have you researched either man? I would suggest researching both sides of each story. Like i said Jim Jones was just a control freak, brain washing, womanizing rapist. Just like Rev. Fred Phelps. Rev Phelps is a child abuser, gay- basher, womanizing holy freak!! The most non christ like person i have ever seen

There are fanatics in every religion and non religion. All that shows is that some people regardless of whether or not they are religious or even non religious for that matter aren't mentally stable.

$$... It is always about money. And the more bazaar and silly, the better. have one guy spout something really off the wall, and we call him nuts. Have many believe the same thing, we call it a religion. And the less educated they are, the better.. Money then just flows out of their pockets so that " they be saved".

I think partly because it's almost a cult of personality or hero worship. the followers don't just follow the religion, they start to think of the leader almost as a god. Eventually the leader starts to believe his own lies and becomes just as delusional as his followers and tragedy ensues.

Because no matter how distorted or evil their views are, they will always find "wackos" that will follow them. Take a look at the "Growing in Grace", or something like that, guy that has silly people tattooing the "666" on them........!!!!

If these people had not found religion as a power source, they would have found another source. They were both sociopaths and psychotic, needing and finding worshippers who had their own mental dysfunction or they wouldn't have been worshippers.
