Girls learn faster than boys so if most of the children around him are girls don't compare. He should know basic words already... like mommy and daddy just remembering parts of the body. like ears, nose, mouth. It takes a lot of repetition, you may not be doing it enough.

On average, kids will only have about ten words at 17 months, and 50 words at age two, when they begin to combine words into 2-word utterances. It is certainly within normal limits to have only a few words at 17 months, and to reach the 2-word level by 30 months.

ten words.
show 4 parts of the body, just showing, for eg, when you ask where is your nose, he will show his nose.
All kids do not develop at the same rate especially the ones with problem in development of languages.
Make sure a paediatrician assess that, its quite simple, doesn't take that long.

My 19mo old can point to most all of her body parts when I say the names, and she says Mama, Daddy, Sissy, thank you, please, cheese, and "here ya go". I think she tries to say many other things, but doesn't really. She babbles constantly and can follow directions. I am pretty sure that she is a normal kid! :) All kids develop at different paces.

perfectly normal. just give him time. receptive language comes first. read to him a lot and talk to him a lot and let him develop langauge in his own time. it will come and he is not at all late.
