You are still living with your parents and to the state that is seen as your parents are still supporting you so you won't be able to get foodstamps until you A. either move out of the house or B. turn 22 years old.

As with most social welfare programs, one must show a need to recieve food stamps. Thereare various formulae for determining need, and the age factor is but one part of the consideration. Under 22, it is determined that you are still dependant upon your parents and their income is used to detrmine if you should recieve food stamps. At 22, you will be considered for independent status and only your income would then be used to determine need. This is not however automatic and you may find that living at home and being in college will disqualify you from recieving aid.

that is really weird, My brother in law gets food stamps, he is 20 and lives with his mom. I think he is cheating the system though, It may be just the income, I dont know, Me personally I think that its bs. I see these people out here that work full time and get a crap load of food stamps because they dont claim their work , they also get their bills paid every few months cause they get evicted or get shut off but the state doesnt reconize this, and then you got people like me and my hubby who both work full time and need a littel boost , We are always coming up a little tight, but we can't get help when we need it. I dont konw how the stupid system works!! Good luck!!

Actually, the person you spoke with may have been mistaken. When I apply for financial aid I am exempt from being a dependent of my mothers because I have a dependent myself. Also, even if that isn't the case for food stamps, they can't deny your daughter food stamps. No matter what! Even if they don't give you food stamps they still have to approve your daughter based on your income.

Because it is seen as your parents are still supporting you, therefor their income is the one that matters. If your parents made less then the minimum then they could apply on your behaf as gaurdians to you and your daughter.
There is no way for the state to be sure you are buying the food unless you live on your own and have no other source of income.

I don't know what state your in, BUT i know a 19 yr old guy on them and he lives with his mom and its only for him(thats in the state of indiana)
when i lived in indiana and i was pregnant with my daughter i lived with my mom i was 21 and i got them
maybe call again and ask to speak to the supervisor of the person you spoke to, and ask them again, and tell them you buy ur own food and keep it seperate from your parents ( my mom had to sign a avadavent to state hers and my dads food was bought, kept and cooked seperate from mine and my daughters,

Probably cause they assume you are getting food paid by from your parents! Just the law! Keep doing your schooling and taking care of your child .that what counts in the long run!

I'd say it's b/c in the states the age of majority is 21. That means technically you are still a kid living at home.

I guess it's different for your state. I think that's an absolutely stupid rule. 18-21 year olds have to eat too.
In my state you can't have money in savings over a couple hundred bucks and get food stamps. I have money in savings for my baby's things, like his crib, so it totals a bit over that. Yet they told me the only way I could get food stamps was to spend all the money I was saving for my baby's things on bills and show them the receipts. Bascially they want you to be trash in order to receive assistance, and I refuse to be trash just for a hundred bucks in groceries...my baby's things are MUCH more important than that.

Not all states have this, but since you're not absolutely independent, it would be your parents who would apply. I even remember I had surgery at age 22 and was sent to pediatrics!
