The next morning she was swollen again. He took the filling out to let it drain.Gave her amoxicillian 500 mg. But this morning she is swollen again.Shouldnt the med be working ? She has been on the med since Tuesday. What could be going on to make her swell up? Should she go back to Dr. Or wait for the med to kick in? Thanks

I agree with Dr Albert on this. The tooth should be left open to drain, he has already removed the nerve in the tooth when it was opened so it won't cause any undue pain.

It could also be that she needs to increase the dosage of the antibiotic. She is probably taking 500mg three times a day or a 1500mg dose, she may find some relief with an increase to four times a day, but this should be upon the advise of your dentist. Discuss this with him before doing any medication change. Occasionally the medication will need to be increased or even changed for various reasons, even such as the weight of a patient. The med's should be working by day two or day three, so it's obvious that something needs to be changed. She should also be taking 800mg of Advil or Motrin every 6 hours to help reduce the swelling and pain.

Make sure your wife is avoiding sunlight so she doesn't get burned and also any alcoholic beverages as they tend to decrease the effectiveness of the medication.

Be sure to call her dentist and let him evaluate this and make any changes necessary. Good luck and hope the rest of the root canal procedure goes better than this initial start!

Swelling is serious, people have died from dental infections. The meds (antibiotics) take approx 48 hrs to take effect, and if the infection was bad, the dentist never should have put a temp filling in it- that blocks the drainage of infection, causing extreme swelling and pain. She needs to see someone ASAP!! And I recommend a different dentist!

HELLO,
UNFORTUNATELY, YOUR WIFE HAS AN ABSCESS IN THE TOOTH WHICH NEEDS A ROOT CANAL. THE INFECTION WANTS TO DRAIN OUT OF THE TOOTH AND WILL TAKE THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE.
OFTEN TIMES THE TOOTH SHOULD BE LEFT OPEN WITH ONLY COTTON IN THE HOLE AND NOT A FILLING SO THAT THE INFECTION CAN BE ALLOWED TO DRAIN.
THE PATIENT MUST BE ON ANTIBIOTICS THAT WILL HELP TO BRING DOWN THE INFECTION UNTIL A ROOT CANAL CAN BE DONE.
AMOXICILLIN 500mg IS APPROPRIATE, BUT IT TAKES 2-3 DAYS TO BEGIN WORKING.
CLINDAMYCIN IS ALSO A VERY GOOD ANTIBIOTIC, BUT IT'S DOSE IS 150mg OR 300mg NOT 500, EVERY 6 HOURS FOR THOSE ALLERGIC TO AMOX.
THE SWELLING MAY BE CAUSED BY PENICILLIN-RESISTANT STRAINS OF BACTERIA. CLINDAMYCIN SHOULD BE USED THEN, BUT THE TOOTH MUST BE ALLOWED TO DRAIN W/O A TEMP. FILLING.

if its swelled again and she is been takin medicine for more than six days and still not relieved of swelling than she need to get her antibiotic changed as in some cases bacterias are resistant to certain drugs and therby need another antibiotic my advice would be to visit the dentist again and get the dressing done again after appropriate drainage and after few days the swelling as well as pain wont be there and she can then go for root canal filling.

Go back to the doctor. The meds are not working. Have him give her something stronger. Or take her to your doctor for an antibiotic shot and some stronger meds. They don't like to remove or work on infected teeth so it will have to be cleared up before any work is done.

My dentist had said nothing should be done when it's swollen. She should be given medicine and wait for it to subside before the drilling. The dentist may have messed up. Maybe a second opinion would be better.

He should have given her the antibiotic before drilling. In any case it will take a day or 2 for the antibiotic to kick in,
you may need something stronger like 500 mg clyndimiacin.
