For your next bird - remember these signs-they are all classic signs of distress and discomfort in a bird -- fluffed, bottom of the cage, closed eyes. . ..
There are several possibilities --
Smoking kills birds, Glade Plug Ins are EXTREMELY dangerous to birds, Cooking using teflon pans -- is toxic becuase of the fumes the teflon gives off -- it could have been an infection of some sort which can only be known by having some of the droppings examined by a vet using a "gram stain"
Also -- OLD cages often had lead in the metal - birds naturally grab the bars with their mouth and climb around and they end up with heavy metal poisoning
If you keep him refrigerated your local avian vet may offer to do a necropsy for you and really find out. . .
they can also get stressed and die of heart attacks

If he had any symptoms before that, he may have had an infection, parasites or pneumonia. If not, he may have had acute salmonellosis. Birds often have salmonella, since they were eggs, and it can develop suddenly. There is no way to tell like this, over the internet. A bird died once because he had swallowed a seed wrongly and it created oedema on his lungs. You can't diagnose like this, if you want a vet can perform an autopsy, but it won't help.
I am sorry for the bird, I had one who died too and I really loved her.

Anytime a bird has the symptoms that your bird showed last night the bird is in shock and needs to see a vet right away. Has there been a sudden temp. change in his environment? Is it cold where he's at? It really doesn't take much to accidentally kill a bird. Sorry for your lose.
