The western world has diluted the meaning of karma. Karma in its self is not good or bad in it's own nature. Karma is simply that each action will set off a chain of reactions. These reactions over time will eventually affect the spirit of the initial action. Therefore it is best to live a life aware that of the possible effects our actions have. To put it in it's simplest terms: Think before you act or react.

I'm with Pixie. The west has diluted the meaning of karma to some kind of universal justice system, when in reality, it refers to the concept of causality. Namely that given A then this implies B. Because causality cannot be proven, then it must be taken as an assertion. So, like in the Four Noble Truths, when you posit that suffering exists, you must believe in karma before you can then posit suffering necessarily has a cause. People would like to believe that positve actions have positive results, but as we all know, causality is more fickle than that . . . positive actions can have negative results (I was just trying to help!) and negative actions can have positive results, but unless karma didn't exist at all, there would be no point in trying to determine the right action.

Karma means that you get back exactly what you put out into the universe. If you put out negtive thoughts, feelings and actions then THAT'S exactly what you get back. Karma is the Universe's way of keeping things in balance and forcing us ALL to be responsible for our OWN actions. Some believe that Karma can be meted out over several lifetimes. I don't believe that, myself. At SOME point in your life you WILL have to accept responsibility for your actions and so Karma is effective for ONLY this lifetime. UNLESS your actions have affected TOO much of the universe and then your responsibilities WILL have to extend over many lifetimes for balance to be achieved (Eg. Hitler, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein and others). Also, if what you put out was GOOD and it effected a large portion of the universe then that TOO will extend over manyh lifetimes (Eg. Jesus, Mother Theresa, Buddha, Ghandi, and others). for the REST of us "regular" humans it will tend to become balanced in the course of our own lifetime..
Accordingly I, MYSELF, choose to put out as much good and positive as I find that I'm able. It makes NO sense to put out bad actions if I know that I'm going to have to recieve the repercussions of those actions.
