I am asking this question to settle an argument between me and someone else. It is a playful argument and we are thankfully not beng hateful. But none the less we disagree!
My point of view is, that there are angels sent by God. And I also believe in demons and the evil acts that Satan does. I am learning that when someone sees a ghost it is the devil. (Most times it isn't a good thing when you see or hear ghosts because they scare you).
The other person's view is that ghosts are lost souls and haven't made it to heaven or hell yet. And they are wandering souls. This to me, seems kind of crazy. And that is the part that we argue about. Also, the person says, that there are good ghosts, that play jokes and are friendly.
My question is how can a ghost be friendly if it is the devil? Honestly, I don't understand this and it just bugs me! Tell me what you think!!

to answer you ? on my behave...
a third of the angels left with the devil when he was booted out of Heaven by God Himself.
Satan, or Lucifer was more beautiful than all the other angels in Heaven and was in charge of much. When tried to over throw God from His throne and so he was cast down he and the 1/3 of the angels followed. As for the nice , well God has His angels who continue to do His work. And then there is the demonic, who the Bible also says they, or the devil comes as an angel of light(deception) seeking who he can (devour...steal, kill, and destroy, or get to take his side.<><

i know what you are saying. i am a christian but i don't know the answer either. on the one hand the devil will never do anything to do you any good, only harm so these ghosts that actually appear and save lives and help people can't really be sent by the devil. However, there are certainly demonic spirits around. There are definitely good and evil spirits, possibly they could be simplistically classed as angels and demons, but I think we have to accept there is a lot we don't know about the spiritual realm whether we are christian or not christian so it's important to remain open minded and despite our opinions, just agree that we indeed don't know everything so it's not worth fighting about. We may all be surprised to find the truth one day.

There are Angels. A third of the Angels followed the Devil, Satan, and left Heaven and are demons.
They have been around a long time so they have observed us since the beginning. They can morph. They can morph into space beings, man forms, and ghosts.
They may appear to be lost souls but I have yet to read anywhere in the Bible about lost souls wandering around in an intermediate world.

The Bible states in Hebrews 9 that reincarnation is not true with this simple statement.
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

That puts the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory to rest once and for all. No intermediate state. Period.

The devil will try and trap you any way he can and some of us went into all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff from UFOs to eastern mysticism to Oui Ja (yes no) boards and ghosts (Borley Rectory) until we were released into the light of Christ.

It is not about winning arguments. It is about truth and knowledge. Jesus promised we can know the truth and He said I am the truth. He said the truth will set you free. So ask all the questions you can, and really dig out the answers and then you will know.

Certainly an interesting question. I personally believe that the ghosts (I prefer the word spirit myself) are either lost souls who have not found their way yet to the right place or they are our lost relatives coming to give a message or watch over you. Some of these spirits can be bad usually for a reason ie if they were an evil person whilst alive they may be the same as a spirit .

Do you ever feel that someone is in a room with you maybe you get a smell of perfume that a loved one who has passed on wore or have you lost something and it turns up later in the strangest place. This could be the spirits visiting you. I would not be afraid of this its their way of saying they are there for you this can also apply to pets too. The following is my own example of a good spirit.

I used to have a spirit in an old house I lived in when I first moved in he would walk past my lounge door on a regular basis and my dog would also follow the direction and seem to sense he was there. After a few months I spoke out loud to the spirit and said that I had moved into his house and hoped he didnt mind and I intended to look after it well. From then I on he did occassionally appear but at least 6 months apart, ater about 4 years he seemed to vanish. My dog stopped reacting. The house was lovely had a really nice feeling nothing spooky.

12 years later I was getting divorced and having to move out he reappeared again about 3 weeks before I moved ! I told him I was really sorry and had promised to look after his home but I couldnt anymore, but I was sure the new owners were going to look after it even better than I had. I had a sense of feeling whoever it was accepted this.

I moved out and a few months later was at a party the new owners of my old house was there and the first thing he said to me was "did you know there was a prescence in that house." We had a very interesting conversation and I told him what I thought, he agreed with me and he too went and told whoever it was he would look after his home too.

Ok I think firstly, that ghosts are indeed lost souls, trapped between this world and the next. These ghosts can be good or evil, essentially they are just lost.
God sends Angels sometimes from Heaven & sometimes there can be very bad ghosts/spirits. I dont believe these come from Hell though, these are just also inbetween Earth & Hell.
Not all ghosts are scary. You can tell the difference. Most of the ghosts I have seen just stand or hover next to my bed at night and leave when I ask them to. Some spirits are very bad and you can tell the difference instantly.
I hope I haven't confused you even more but I guess I'm saying both you and your friend are right in your own ways =)

I was brought up to believe that the ghosts we are aware of are lost souls who have not resolved issues before passing. They may still be trying to complete what they feel has been left undone. I was also taught that some of these are malevolent and have still to be disbanded form their earthly ties. I have grown up in homes with ghosts that I am led to believe my sister and I talked to as youngsters. My son has also seen his granny, only when at my dads, and she died a year before he was born - we know he was seeing someone because he would smile and wave or hold toys out at nothing before he could talk and he always walked into the lounge and said 'hello granny' once he could talk. That has passed as he has gotten older but I doubt very much my mother is the work of the devil more likely she is just keeping an eye on my dad to make sure he is coping on his own x

I used to agree with your friend because I didn't know what the scriptures say. Now I agree with you. Satan & his demons are very dangerous. There are no such things as good ghosts as they are all demons & under Satans influence. The scriptures warn against contacting them so thats good enough for me. You can also pray to God for an answer, He will let you know if they're bad or not. That's what I've learned anyway.

I agree with your friend to a point. There is no devil. You only percieve spirits as being of or from the devil because the idea of them is unsettling to you. You probably attribute most bad, uncomfortable, or unsettling experiences you have as coming from the devil. I don't know if I totally agree with the "lost soul" idea. I think these spirits had some work left to do on earth, but for one reason or another they could not stay in their physical bodies. I don't believe in heaven or hell either. I believe that when these souls have finished their business, they fully move on to the afterlife and then reincarnate to a new life like we all do. I honestly don't understand when people have to believe in the devil in order to process the difficulty of life.

The only good ghost is the Holy Ghost. Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit not the same. Ghost- means there is evidence of it. Your friend doesn't understand that when people die. They are removed from this world and have no contact with it. So that leaves the Holy Ghost and angels. Angels can be good or evil.

I agree with your perspective. I do not believe disembodied human spirits wander the earth. I believe they ascend into heaven or descend into hell after leaving the body through death. (quite literally)
As for ghosts, these are most often demons, which I believe are to be distinguished from fallen angels. Fallen angels have there base of operations in the lower heaven. (The Bible speaks of 3 heavens, the lowest appears to roughly correspond to earth's atmosphere) Demons are the most likely culprits behind sightings of "ghosts". Demons as I understand them are lesser (than angels) earthbound spirits. (Jesus spoke of the demon leaving a man and walking through dry places - angelic travel is associated with flight). The Bible does not tell us of their origin. Some have speculated they may be the disembodied spirits of a pre-Adamic race that was wiped out by the judgment of God for siding with Satan in his rebellion against God. Some believe they may be the disembodied spirits of the offspring of angels and human women (see Genesis 6:1-5; Jude 6,7). This is all speculation.
What the Bible does tells us is they do exist and they can be dealt with through faith and the authority of the name of Jesus. One of the signs of true believers is "In My name they shall cast out demons."
I should add virtually every culture recognizes the existence of demons, certainly the Greek culture from whence the word is derived. The difference is that in all cultures they tend to be regarded as lesser gods, which may be malevolent or may be benign or even benevolent. The teaching of Jesus and His apostles make it clear that all of these beings are evil in nature and under the authority of Satan and therefore are to be resisted and opposed.
