morally and/or legally?

i took my puppy to the vet yesterday because he had a reaction to his vaccines, and while i was waiting to pick him up after work, a man was picking up his female dog who had just been spayed.

the vet tech whispered to him, and yes, she was pregnant, as you suspected, so she needs to take an antibiotic.

i think it affected me a little.. how sad? i mean.. the puppies may have ended up euthanized anyways because of the unwanted pet population.. but it seemed so awful to me..

and the mother dog, wouldn't this affect her hormones? wouldn't she have instinctively known she was pregnant?

any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated

No it would not have any effect on her...she would not have known she was pregnant and no if early in her pregnancy it wouldn't have any effect on her hormones any more so then a regular spay would.

I would assume that she was in the very, very beginning stages of pregnancy, (before it could be apparent even with ultrasound or x-ray or even with a canine pregnancy test) before surgery was done(in other words under 21 days) 1) because most vets will not spay a dog that is far along in pregnancy unless there is some dyer medical reason to do so(in otherwords a detectable pregnancy) 2) the owner wasn't even sure she was pregnant and there are changes that take place that even a clueless owner would have noticed if she was over 21 days pregnant.
Most vets will do a check on a dog before she is spayed if the owner thinks there is even the slightest possability she is pregnant...this exam would include palpation, pregnancy test and either x-ray or ultrasound.

I would absolutely do it! It is better than bringing those dogs into a world where they will either not have a home or they will take a home from another unwanted dog. I would get it done the second I new she was pregnant reduce the risk and so the puppies would be less developed, but I would do it at any point the vet considered safe. I feel more responsible for the mother than the puppies, and giving birth is risky even without having the added risk of a bigger sire. I would protect her before brining unwanted dogs intot he world. ADD: I fogot to mention that I still 100% understand thatsome people cannot bring themselves to do that. As long as they care for the puppies and the mother and get her spayed afterwards its fine. I only ask that those people not condemn me for being willing to spay a pregnant b*tch.

It is not legally wrong. Morally, that depends on your point of view. With the thousands of unwanted dogs dying in shelters every day and the hundreds (if not thousands) of dogs being abused by uncaring humans I have a hard time answering this one. On the one hand, it is sad that the puppies didn't even get a chance at life. On the other hand, abortion is a far less cruel fate than being passed on to irresponsible owners and being abused, neglected, and ultimately killed anyway.

It's really hard to say one way or another without knowing the circumstances behind the story. It may be that the dog was scheduled to be spayed and came into heat at an unexpected time and the owner wasn't sure if she was pregnant or not. It may be that the owner would not be able to financially handle a pregnant ***** and puppies. It may also be possible that the owner knew there was something wrong with his ***** that could result in a fatal defect in the puppies or that would make pregnancy and nursing very dangerous for her. I'm sure the owner has his own reasons for going ahead with the surgery in spite of his suspicions.

This happens to many dogs especially ones rescued from puppy mills which I'm willing to bet she probably was. Puppy mill owners will often dispose of sick or injured dogs in trash cans or on the side of the road. If the dog is lucky she will escape and become a stray. These dogs are often so conditioned with depression and abuse that they no longer possess natural instict to care for the pups and will abandon them once they are born. Vets normally do not abort pups unless it is in an early stage of pregnancy and it doesn't effect the hormones anymore than doing into heat. It may sound cruel but then again so is pet overpopulations.

It is not wrong to spay an animal while its pregnant. It is sad yes. But imagine from the owners point of view. The owner is going to have to put out more money for the animal to go to the vet during her pregnancy, then when the pups are born and after they start walking. The owner will have to clean up after puppies, anywhere from 1 to 8, sometimes more. The owner is the one who is going to have to potty train the animal, feed the animal, the probably first shots, he there is the problem of finding suitable homes for these babies.
In the long run, because we have aproblem with so many unwanted animals, it would be better off not having the puppies.

I worked at a vets office before, and I saw a pregnant dog get an ultrasound and the vets confirmed she was pregnant, like the owner expected. I heard the vet say that he wanted her spayed because he didn't want the puppies.....It hurt me also, I didn't understand how the man would just kill the puppies and not give them a chance at life. I left that day disgusted, luckily I left before the surgery started. By spaying a pregnant dog would affect her hormones but that's why the vet told her owner that she would need an antibiotic. It depends on how far along she was....she may not have known she was pregnant.

It is absolutely NOT wrong.

What IS wrong is that idiots let their dog get pregnant in the first place.

They could kill their dog with a pregnancy, especially if she's not healthy, or structurally sound.

Those puppies could die during birth. They could end up without homes, dumped in a ditch, or at a shelter which could put them down anyway.

They could end up in a home, where they're starved and neglected. They could end up being beat to death.

So no, it's not 'cruel'. It's humane. Go to a shelter and look at the dogs that are sitting there, waiting for their trip out back to die. All because someone else's dog had puppies, and a person took one of them home.

It is no different that a pregnant woman waiting three or four months to get an abortion. No one has a problem with that so why are we all sad about a dog getting spayed while pregnant? Maybe, because we instinctively know it is wrong to kill life at whatever stage it may be. But I don't understand is the outrage you feel about a dog but not a human life? Well. enough rant. It is sad but ultimately not my decision. We can only hope that people start treating their animals with a bit more respect.

This to me this is just as bad as a human getting an obortion. No pet should be spayed while pregnant.People should be more responsible about containing a pet when in season and unwanted pregnancys wouldn't happen.

I think that people should wait unitl the litter is born, and then spay. I know about the unwanted pup. pop. but there always welcome at my house, and to me a life is a life, even if it has four legs.

I hope that people can help stop this by spaying and neutering, I am so sorry that you feel this way.
